Not to heap too much blame on one person - there's plenty to go around - but I got to thinking this morning that not only did Coomes' early errors cost us two runs (both runners he failed to put out scored), they made Poche pitch for two extra outs. Without those extra pitches, Poche finishes the sixth, maybe goes deeper. Then Hess isn't gassed going into the ninth.
Offense was much worse than pitching. Defense was also subpar. It'd be easier to swallow if FU beat us while we played a solid game. Moment looked too big for the team, which is on Mainieri. Credit to FU for beating us. PS - That slide into second hurt and was bush league IMO. Glad FU second baseman didn't get hurt.
I have no chain to jerk, as I will not engage in worthless banter with someone like you, but if you feel the need to do so knock yourself out. I will respond with your favorite tag line "have a nice day!"
I always thought Skip drove his guys harder as the games became more important. Playoffs and Championships are won more consistently by those type of guys. I know CPM style is different but you have to do a better job with these big games. I wouldn't be as upset if we played well and just got beat, but we certainly left our best at home this series. I still think he is our best bet and think for the most part gave us a great team this year, but he has to make some improvements. Congrats Tigers!
I agree with this. Part of my frustration with the finals is...I really believe that top to bottom LSU had the better team.,,of course FU would disagree. Just thought we brought most of our struggles on ourselves. All due respect to CPM. Really enjoyed tis season and these Tigers.
Probably moreso in football than other sports. Lombardi, Saban, Belichick. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley and Gregg Popovich as well as John Wooden may have been just as driven but are at least outwardly different personality types than the typical hard nosed football coach. Bobby Knight is an exception. Earl Weaver was a pretty hard nosed baseball manager constantly arguing with the umpires and getting ejected from games but his teams never won anything. Joe Torre, Tony LaRussa - At the top of the A list but different in demeanor than Saban or Belichick. No doubt Skip could drive his team as well as have them mentally prepared for the biggest stages but in pubic he is an affable guy prone to telling great stories. Mainieri made some crucial errors in judgement in the two CWS finals series games and that has been discussed ad infinitum here, there and everywhere but the fact is that he is still a very good baseball coach. Certainly one of the best in college ball. BUT - He is not Skip Bertman. Nobody is. Last night after the game a guy texted me and said he would have started Lange over Poche. I told him to tweet that so the whole world could see how big an idiot he is.
Two pretty damn even teams on paper. LSU's better hitters didn't hit. LSU's better fielders made key errors. Theirs didn't. They scored enough runs to win over our Johnny Wholestaff. We couldn't score on their Johnny Wholestaff. Coomes dosen't make the errors, Poche pitches longer with the game still tied. Slaughter doesn't get called for interference we score 2 runs and Hess only has to close, or maybe Newman as a 1 inning bridge to Hess and we are playing again tonight for all the marbles.
