They may have been but like the priest and bishops of The Inquisition they were as far from Christianity as you can get. Murdering 6 million Jews and murdering millions more is not Christian.
Sure it was Christian. The pope didn't condemn their atrocities. And don't forget the Crusades. Slaying people who believe in other religions is the Christian thing to do.
As much as we don’t want to believe it, religions are often more of a reflection of the society rather than the other way around. When society is/was primitive the religion was/is more comfortable with violence especially violence in its name. Ancient Judaism encouraged violence against others such as the Philistines. Likewise after the fall of Rome as Christianity expanded forced conversion of whole populations was both countenanced and encouraged by the church. Likewise as the crusades attempted to retake the holy land from the Muslims wanton violence was if not encouraged accepted. Both religions have always had a core that was directed at moderating violence. This core did create and encourage that we treat others better. It was a slow change as a whole society had to radically change. It has taken 2000 years and is still not over. Most of the change has been in the last 200 years as society’s change has accelerated. Frankly I don’t know enough about Islam to understand if that same core is there. Whether it’s there or not is of little consequence at this time as the greater part of those who follow it are trapped in a way of life that hasn’t changed enough. Places like Afghanistan and Central Asia are still effectively in the 9th-12th centuries. The rest of the Middle East is still culturally in the 15th century at best. Remember religions are our aspiration to reflect the grace of God. Unfortunately they are run by men who have all the faults and imperfections we all have. We must always understand this and not only push ourselves to follow God more closely but ask the church to do the same.
Well just how far do you want to go back? Maybe we need to check and see if Fred Flintstone was a Christian and condemn modern day Christianity because old Fred was a Christian asshole. I am Catholic but have become disenchanted with what they are doing now so I can't even be considered a Christian. I have no dog in the fight. My whole point is going back in history and blaming what Christians did and transferring that to today's Chritianity is wrong. If you think that way then all white people should be blamed for the racism of slavery starting in the 1600's. Don't get your point.
On a side note. The Catholic church has been riddled with pedophiles for a long time and lost a lot of followers including me. Dennis Miller did a joke about that. "I went to confession and when the priest asked me what were my sins I said you go first"
maybe not though, vengeful old testament god did his share of mass murdering. at any rate, the point is it would be nice if we could just be rational and moral without religion. our morals do not come from christianity. you dont need the ten commandments to realize that stealing and killing makes people angry sad and unhappy.
how are we supposed to know what this god wants? i mean the real god of course not scientology god or mormon god. imean the real one the baptist one
You should go back to devout Christianity. You have a natural flair for assholery. I mean that as a compliment
