Southern Mississippi baseball coach Corky Palmer had come to expect the call each June.
It was from good friend Mike Montoro. Palmer had attended his first College World Series in 2005 with Montoro, and the call would be an annual invitation from Montoro for Palmer to accompany him back to Omaha.
Palmer would decline, staying true to the vow he made shortly after leaving Rosenblatt Stadium in 2005.
“Omaha was unbelievable,'' Palmer said, “but I told myself that I wouldn't go back unless I was bringing my team with me.''

It is perhaps the most important stopwatch in Virginia baseball history.
It resides in the back pocket of third-base coach Kevin McMullan, the Cavaliers’ associate head coach.
On Sunday, as Virginia attempted to defy odds and upset Mississippi in the Oxford Super Regional, McMullan glanced at the time on the watch.
It showed the number that corresponded with the opposing pitcher’s delivery time to the plate.
McMullan pounced. Ole Miss bent and broke. Virginia stole six bases en route to a 5-1 regional-clinching win and a ticket to Omaha, Neb.

That's more than another funny line by baseball coach Pat Murphy. Offensively, his fourth College World Series team is about small ball and pressuring its way around the bases for enough runs to take full advantage of a pitching staff with the nation's best ERA.
ASU ranks third nationally in walks, fourth in triples, 20th in stolen bases and 39th in sacrifice bunts.

So the coach was timing the Ole Miss pitcher's delivery to the plate with a stopwatch, and used that to decide when to steal bases? Did I understand that story correctly? If so, I'm surprised that's not against the rules.

Most people will say 1.5 seconds is the magic delivery time for stealing bases.

Anything over 1.3-1.35 seconds is "in the zone" for the faster players (Grovatt, Parker, Cannon, Procia, and especially Gosselin) to steal. Just about everyone in the UVa lineup gets the green light at 1.5. I'd be surprised if less than 3 singles turn into doubles tomorrow. LSU better also watch out for the double-steal with runners at the corners.

I think we were on to that with that surprise throw to 3rd after the pickoff at second in the 7th (I think). Looks like someone watched some UVA video. :wave:
