I hate to argue about this, because i wish you were right. But the lure of the Cowboys on the world stage is completely different than the small market Saints. To me, with the success Payton has had and the lack of success the Cowboys have had, it should be the opposite. The Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world, even though they've sucked for a quarter century. Payton has been close to JJ since his days here under Parcells. Everything is lined up for this to happen. Even though I'm sure he hasn't learned his lesson, JJ now admits it was his fault Jimmy Johnson left. Bottom line is JJ wants nothing more in life than to win another Super Bowl and Payton is his best shot at getting there. But taking the Cowboy job immediately would be a spit in the face of Gail Benson and I think Payton is too classy to do that. So give it a little bit of time. I don't question Jones' desire to hire SP, the Dallas media's desire to have him, the Cowboy fanbase's desire to have him, or JJ's willingness to pay the Saints whatever compensation would be necessary to get him. I only question if he would be willing to work for someone who will want a say in everything after 16 years of being the unquestioned final authority.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jerry has already tried to contact him. My gut feeling is that he will not coach in '22; maybe he'll do TV. If he wants to coach anywhere in '23 or '24, that team will have to compensate the Saints. He won't be a "free agent" until the 2025 season.
