Urban Meyer, legend, 32 games over .500 in just four seasons as a head coach, the mastermind behind that Bob Davie/Notre Dame offensive juggernaut, has been named the best hire by College Football News website. Urban has to be the man; FoxSport’s college site says so. And po’ ol’ LSU left with Les Miles to try and save face, Les Miles just a mere 7 games over .500 in those four seasons! How could anyone not see how LSU screwed up?



After all a look at the record show how much better Urban is:

2001 --- Bowling Green goes 8-3 in the MAC, finishes 2nd in their division, but had wins over Missouri (who went 4-7) and Northwestern (4-7). That loss to Western Michigan was tough.



OklahomaState finishes 4-7 in the pansy Big XII and only has win over Oklahoma (11-2) to show for the effort.



Obviously, Meyer wins this one going away. Closes losses in the Big XII do not make up for wins over Akron, Kent, or Ohio in the MAC. Besides FoxSports knows all.



2002 --- Bowling Green goes 9-3, again finishes 2nd in their division and the 1-3 finish really isn’t a reflection on Urban. He earns a plane ticket to Salt Lake City and the Utah job.



OklahomaState goes 8-5, goes to the lowly Houston Bowl and beat Southern Mississippi. So what if OSU beats Oklahoma again to go with a win over Nebraska (7-7, horrible team, nothing compared to the Central Florida team that mauled Bowling Green). Who cares that OSU finished on a roll winning 6 of their last 7?



Meyer has one more win and moves on to the powerhouseMountain West! Miles remains in Stillwater. This one has to go to Meyer, too. FoxSports said so!



2003: ---Utah goes 10-2, wins the conference and destroys Southern Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl. Close loses include at texas a$m and steamroller New Mexico. Common opponent with OklahomaState includes Wyoming, a team Utah beats by 30. Although tied at halftime, Meyer cleverly lulled Wyoming to sleep before pouncing with two late TD’s to increase the victory margin.



OklahomaState goes 9-4. the blow out win over texas a$m and the first-half mauling of Wyoming just prove common opponents don’t mean anything. Besides Miles lost to Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl and Ole Miss couldn’t have been equal to USM in 2003!



Meyer chalks up yet another win. Obviously, Florida snagged the best, LSU dragged their feet again. Just ask Fox!



2004: --- Utah goes 13-0, destroys perennial power Pittsburgh, run away champs of the Big East!



OklahomaState goes 7-5 and mauled by OhioState, who struggled after beating Michigan, and should be considered a major flop.



Meyer is another runaway. After all, didn’t Notre Dame want him, and Notre Dame hasn’t hired a boneheaded coach in years… and FoxSports knows college football.

...unless, you believe that the Big XII is just a hair below the SEC, winning at Oklahoma State is akin to winning consistantly at Mississippi State. Les Miles resume stacks up to and above a pretty boy who proved he could whip the little ones, but really hasn't had to face top notch opposition week-in, week-out like thew Big XII. Les Miles won with talent was definitly lower 1/3 in the Big XII. Les Miles is going keep LSU in places Meyer only dreams of ever visiting. Urban Meyer ranks 4th in the EAST as a coach. Proof? Will the win on October 15 be enough? Mark it, March 9, 2005. Florida will be howling for Meyer's head within three years because he can't beat LSU, Georgia, FSU, and maybe South Carolina.

I love the way this is stacking up for letdown city. Just when the Gators feel like they are getting off the mat, reality is going to smack them right back down. Urban Meyer is the most overrated coach in the history of organized sports. I've said it a zillion times - he's a Bob Davie pizza crust with a little polish on him.

Spurrier is going to drag Urban Meyer through the SEC East like he's his little bitch. Meyer might win in 2005, but after that he's headed for the tank...

Oh! I forgot! Urban made some co-eds college days at Utah great. Give him a warm fuzzy for that! Atfer all who else, aside from Curley Hallman could make the same co-ed claim?

Les Miles will have his chance to prove all the haters wrong.
As for U. Meyer, he was very young at ND under Davie, and only coached special teams.
We'll see who's better in the headup match when Florida comes to BR. The only common opp. I think they had was TX A&M last year. Utah dismantled them at home with A&M making the score a little respectable 41-21( two meaningless 4th qt TDs against Meyer's scrubs), while Franchionne went to Stillwater and had OSU beat 36-6 going into the 4th (OSU also scoring two meaningless 4th qt TDs).

It's hard to see how anyone can suggest at this point in time that Les Miles is a better ball coach than Urban Meyer. If Urban is unproven on the big stage, Les is even moreso.

The biggest knock against Meyer---that he wins with other people's talent---can be answered in two words:

So what?

We won't learn anytime soon if he's a great recruiter because he doesn't have to be to win at Florida. He's proven he can get the most out of the talent he has on hand, so there's no legitimate reason to suspect he can't or won't win at Florida.

Sure, I want Les to whip Urban's ass, but Meyer's not a chump as a coach.

Also, the "Les did well at a second-tier Big XII school" doesn't do much for me, either. Oklahoma State has consistently underperformed in comparison to Texas Tech, a program that to many here is a one-trick pony that's not a "legit" team. From 2001 through 2004, Les Miles and Oklahoma State's record against Mike Leach and Texas Tech is 1-3.

One and three! And that one win came by a grand total of two points (51-49) while the losses were by an average of 20 points each.

Or, to put it another way, if Okla St is the Miss. St of the Big XII, then they've been beaten regularly---and decisively-- by the Kentucky of the Big XII since 2001.

See, it's easy to represent facts in a certain light in order to coax people into drawing certain conclusions. Urban is a good coach and I suspect Les is as well, but the fact remains that Urban has proven it to a greater extent via accomplishments as a head coach than has Les.

And that's no misrepresentation.

I disagree completely. The Big XII is a much tougher stage than anything Meyer faced. If you're going to use the Red Raiders, why not toss in Texas, Miles never beat them either. However, Miles did beat teams of less or comparable talent regularly, and better talent usually. Miles won with almost no defensive talent in a historically difficult place.

Meyer, much like Mike Leach, outscored his opponents with a passsing attack that is predicated on slow linebackers and undermaned secondaries. Meyer is Tommy Bowden of 21st century. Just as Mike Leach does, Meyer will struggle when facing defenses with speed, depth, and talent.

Miles operated a ground control running attack in games he was out-talented in (OU, Texas), but opened up things against most everyone else. I can only imagine how Miles will romp with the candy store he inherited.

Urban Meyer is hyped becuase Notre Dame wanted him and Florida took him over Spurrier. He ain't close to his press clippings.

IMO, LSU has a slightly better chance than Florida because of slightly better talent, good scheduling, & slightly better overall recruiting. That puts the onus on coaching (to deliver the big win). I do not expect Urban Meyer to be another Zook or have a Bob Davie-type melt down at Florida. Florida with Meyer will compete with Tennessee & Georgia every year for the East title. Spurrier is nothing more than a joker in the deck, and above all else, I'm glad he's not back at Florida, where he has proven he could do LSU title hopes some serious damage.

I agree with you, except that I think Florida has the slight edge overall. You are dead on when saying Spurrier is the joker in the deck. What Spurrier will do is be the spoiler. Screw Meyer and Fulmer once in a while
