Handing Athletic Director Joe Alleva the pink slip is not an action necessary because of the lacrosse situation. That situation-ongoing-is merely the last straw, the latest in a long string of grievances.
Alleva was brought in after Tom Butters, one of the greatest athletic directors in the history of collegiate sports. Butters helped bring the Duke basketball program to national prominence, and his innovative spirit is part of what gave our school its overall reputation of athletic excellence.

It's true that Alleva has prospered on the field in his tenure. But most of that success is due to the foundations Butters laid-and to the increased prominence, financially and academically, of the University as a whole. For that, we thank Nan Keohane.

And while it's true that Alleva oversaw the building of facilities, it is equally true that the entire University underwent a period of massive construction. Given that fact, the construction was not particularly visionary.

Our concerns with Alleva are numerous. Firstly, most egregiously, the University knows that he misled its administrators about steroid use on the baseball team. Yet in the face of steroid use, in the face of players transferring with alarming frequency and parents complaining about the quality of the program, Alleva only did one thing: continue to renew coach Bill Hillier's contract.

And the team wasn't even winning.

That contract renewal brings up another of Alleva's deficiencies. Coaches he's hired have been close to him socially-and when compared to the other candidates, it seems that personal connections outweighed other qualifications for the job.

Thirdly is the culture among athletes Alleva promotes and oversees. Student athletes should be more regimented and organized as a group than the average Duke student. They have a devotion to their sport-and to the University whose name is emblazoned on their uniforms. With that devotion comes a certain creed, a code of conduct that has to be enforced from the top down.

Dear God/Jahovah/Allah/Yaweh/Vishnu/{insert choice here},

Please make most of us completely wrong in our initial disbelief and repulsion at the potential, reported hire of Mr. Alleva as the new LSU AD.

Please make us eat mounds of crow because you intend to guide his hand and make the LSU athletic department the model of excellence in the nation.

Oh, and I'd like to lose 20 pounds and 20 years, while you're paying attention to me.

Let's get something straight before you all start jumping off bridges. At LSU the AD has 3 responsibilities (in order of importance):

#1 Don't F with Tailgating
#2 Keep the teams out of Sanctionable Trouble
#3 Hire good coaches

If he does those 3 things right, he could be tommy tuberville for all I care.

The best kind of AD is the one you don't know you have.

Well, if you believe what you read, and hear, he sucks at all of the above....with the exception of F'ing with Tailgating.....but, I doubt they even know what tailgating is at Duke.

#1 seems to be the only thing on that list that might not be in trouble. referencing articles already quoted:

What beer specifically? I am running analytical testing to see which beer pairs best with peanut butter cups. Your contribution to this survey is greatly appreciated. BTW, if you have any experience with Captain Crunch and beer, toss that information in as well. :laflagwav

Alleva... sounds like a fancy new prescription drug.

Why did the guy leave Duke? His three children all graduated there, he himself has been at Duke for some 30 years, and spent a decade as their AD. According to the bio Duke has of him (here), many of his accomplishments there do seem pretty outstanding (granted, the bio is going to try to paint him in the most positive light possible).

The LSU fanbase is insane.

Not "Oh, those wacky Cajuns!" insane or "My they get loud at football games" insane, but literally, unequivocally, bat s**t insane. Approaching Kentucky levels of insanity.
