I have digital cable with 5.1 audio. Last year i didnt have digital cable, so no digital sound, so the 5.1 wasnt that special for football games. Anyone have a surround sound setup? Is it worth it for football season, particularly LSU games? IF not, then I'm probably gonna get rid of digital cable... I love having my movies in surround, but I dont watch enough channels to justify digital.

5.1 for football games is pretty cool - I don't know if its 30 bucks a month cool though. The rear surrounds are usually just crowd noise. The louder the stadium gets, the louder they get. The front surrounds are usually the action of the game and crowd noise. The announcers usually come through exclusively on the center channel. The whole package is noticeably better than normal stereo. You will get a much better feeling of "being there" compared to stereo or mono. However, the commericals will revert back to normal stereo or mono.

The caveat to all this is that the game has to be broadcast in 5.1. The major networks usually do, but I'm not sure about the JP or the Tigervision games. Also - some recievers are capable of simulating surround sound with just a normal stereo signal. My Onkyo does an OK job for games that aren't broadcast in native 5.1.

My advice? Upgrade to High Definition. It's like looking through a window, plus HD games are always 5.1.
