Paul Dietzel graduated from Miami of Ohio, don't know where he was from originally. Bo Rein's alma mater was Ohio State. A number of the very early coaches were from northern universities as well.

dinardeaux was originally from new jersey (?) prior to attending notre dame.

Yes, Yankee is more New England/New York than Midwest.

Michigan is about as north as you can get in my book.
