Indy, every one of the conference schools splits their revenue equally with the other schools in the conference after expenses. They may make a million or a little more each from the BCS payout. A little more if 2 teams make it from each conference. Notre Dame will get a minimum of 1 million if they don't make it but in the years they do they will net much more than one million. It was forced on them, last year. The other BCS members were pissed that Notre Dame would get as much as their entire conferences when they made a BCS Bowl. So they cut them back to the 4.5 million or so. Now they are fixing it by giving them the one million when they don't make it just like the conference schools get when don't. They will still come out ahead of the other schools if they make it once every few years becuase they do not have to share their revenue. If they never make it they will come out the same as most schools.
I don't disagree that ND would come out ahead if they BCS frequently, but in the overall scheme of things, it's not a huge amount and it's only if they go frequently. Let's play with some numbers: BCS payout for one conf team participant: 14.5 mil Under the old system, and there is probably something similar in the new with probably bigger bucks too, a second team got 4.5 mil with the remainder divied up among the BCS teams. If the BCS conferences have 2 at large teams that's 20m/6 or 3.3 mil more. So the total revenue for one team participation will typically be 17.8m. The SEC gives 1.7M to the participating team plus an unspecified travel allowance. Let's say the total expense is 2.5M, so the net is 15.3. But if the conf has 2 participants, they get another 4.5M. I'm not quite sure, but it looks like the team is allocated about 600K less for expenses, so the net would be 2.5M (expenses = 1.2M + my assumed 800K for travel.). If a conference had a second team every 2nd year. then the net would be an additional 1.25M/yr, for a total net of 16.55. ND's payout would have to come out of this. The 2.75 payout/yr would be split 6 ways (this works out to be about 460K/yr/conf. So the Grand net to the SEC would be 16.09M. The SEC splits this 13 ways and you get 1.24M/team. ND's take over two years would 5.5-2.5 or 3.0M, for a yearly avg of 1.5M. So in this scenario ND would take home a little more than a quarter mil more per year. The number could be somewhat higher if another nonBCS conference team made it, but this is mitigated by the fact that there will now be another BCS bowl and another opportunity for an at-large team for the BCS conferences. ND's take drops to 1.33 if they avg a BCS every three years (and the conf take would go up slightly due to less money going to them. So yes ND can make more money, but it's nothing compared to what they could earn under the old system. ND would avg 1.2M/yr by making it once in 10yrs and 2.4M/yr by making it just twice in 10 yrs.
I'm not sure if all the other numbers were added and devided correctly but this I will agree totally with, and that is a very good thing.
