When the Saints announced they had cut Bobby McCray this week, I must say I was shocked. I still have the images of him in the playoffs knocking out Kurt Warner and abusing Brett Favre. Even during the team's recent organized team activities McCray stood out to me, applying pressure and batting down passes. To get down to the bottom of why, I called up a guy who knows EVERYTHING about football.

Mike Detillier told me, "It raised a question mark with me when the Saints signed Jimmy Wilkerson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At that time you wondered a little bit; now with Will Smith, Alex Brown, Wilkerson and Bobby McCray, there had to be an odd man out here. That's a lot of money laid out at the defensive end position." The guru of the gridiron added, "I really thought at that time something like this might happen."

Bottom line is for what you're paying Bobby McCray, he has been an underachiever. He's not playing up to his salary level. Has he flashed at times good pass rush skills? Yes, but he has not been a consistent football player. To be honest with you, the two knocks on him in Jacksonville showed up in New Orleans too.

1) He's not been the most assignment sharp football player on the field. There have been times that his defensive line coaches with the Saints have not been really happy with him blowing assignments and also being a bit of a freelance performer.

2) While he has flashed the ability to rush the quarterback, he's not been a consistent player in that area. But when he is in the lineup, teams have run the football toward his side of the field.

In the end, McCray is just a one dimensional player. The newest Saints, Brown and Wilkerson, are better against the run and are decent pass rushers. Also figure Anthony Hargrove in the mix to compete for the starting gig.

Bobby Hebert added, "Why did the Saints cut Bobby McCray? On July 1st they owed him a 1.25 million dollar roster bonus On top of that you throw in a 2 million dollar base salary."

The Cajun Cannon added, "They couldn't trade him because then a team would owe him 3.2 million."

That's a lot of cheddar for a guy who isn't a starter. Could the Saints resign McCray to a less lucrative deal? Sure, but the team would have likely tried to work something out before releasing him.

Mark down another player from last year's super squad that is no longer part of the equation. In the end though, the Saints may just be using addition by subtraction.

3.25 million was a bit too much for a player who can only rush the passer and is "ok" at doing that at best. And he has that bad back.

Shocking at first but then ultimately wasn't when you weighed everything into the equation.

My only question is did they upgrade the position much? I'd say maybe a little but not significantly. I think DL is still a glaring weakness.

Alex Brown is an excellent run defender and a decent pass rusher.

Wilkerson is a good pass rusher who takes the place of an oft injured McCray.

So yes we are way ahead of where we were last year at LDE.
