I know what a Sooner is. I understand what a Boomer is, but what sense does this cheer make? "Boomer Sooner," please help me understand this. These are two nouns with conflicting meanings. It's like "Dog Cat." I am very confused.
Nobody can explain this? I think it is just nonsensical like the "Hotty Toddy" thing Ole Miss does. The university website just refers to a traditional song some Okie wrote, but offers no good reasoning behind the phrase.

In the article, the author gives the following explanation of the phrase "Boomer Sooner": "Those who had promoted or "boomed" the idea of double-crossing the tribes and opening the land to white settlement were called Boomers. Those who jumped the gun were called Sooners. Thus you have "Boomer Sooner," actually a combination of two classes of crooks, but don't tell that to an Oklahoma football fan. The name Oklahoma is a combination of two Choctaw words, meaning red and people, and from that comes "Land of the Red Man." Again, I don't know how credible this historian is.
I actually find this humorous because this has GOT to be either an LSU or a Texas individual that has placed the previously ridiculous comments about the origin of 'Boomer Sooner'. We just have to take 'pity' on you folks that don't have the literacy to be able to understand. Maybe someday you'll be 'schooled' and learn the 'true' meaning of 'class' regarding college football as well as academics.
