actually, nick has a soft spot for Ohio being he has roots there (kent state, browns). If full control was given to him in the right situation in Cleveland, it very well could be the place he ends up. he always has warm fuzzy thoughts when speaking of it. who the hell in their right mind would wanna coach in Ohio during the winter?
Soft Spot for Ohio? I think that you are mistaken. The books that I've read about CNS indicate that he grew up being a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the West Virginia Mountaineers. He went to Kent State in Ohio, because WV did NOT offer him a football scholarship. When CNS went to coach for the Cleveland Browns, his entire family cringed, because they are all fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This info is from the latest books on CNS. Where do you get your info, Brother? :lsug:
actually he spoke of cleveland earlier last week and one of the local radio blowhards said he was all giddy when speaking of it and referred to a sentimental connection he had with the browns. If you listened to him over the years he speaks very well of his experiences at Cleveland as if its where he attributes much of his knowledge and current success. I didn't get it from a book. Maybe its just his love for Belichick in particular which is lost in translation. I certainly hope so. His family cringed? What exactly did he say? Though a known control freak and if offered the GM job as well as HC as Butch Davis had @ Cleveland with double his current salary, I'd be willing to bet he'd be a tad interested. Also, I have never heard a coach, much less an NFL coach recently fired putting his name in the hat of a college job where there is no opening. Why the hell did Butch Davis publically announce he wants the LSU job? To build up his stock for places unaware he is interested? I don't get that. I guess his agent said it was best. Still ridiculous. Unless he knows something we don't.
As an LSU and Browns fan... Butch Davis was fired "resigned" for bad football, not for expressing an interest anywhere. He "might" even take a year off. Please link me to anywhere it was publicly stated that Butch wanted the LSU job. I'm not buying it. Futher, Cleveland WILL be hiring a GM. The next Browns coach will not have as much control as Butch did. Double the salary, maybe.
who the hell said he was fired for expressing an interest in coaching somewhere else? obviously he was on his way out and wanted his name to be out there. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041127/SPORTS0202/411270328 Browns coach Butch Davis wants LSU job November 27, 2004 By Glenn Guilbeau [email protected] LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- In a new twist to the annual holiday tradition of LSU coach Nick Saban's name being dropped around NFL openings, an NFL coach probably on the way out has said he is interested in LSU. Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis, who reportedly is on the way out, said last week he is interested in the Florida and LSU coaching jobs. Florida has an opening. LSU does not, at the moment. "Butch Davis has not contacted me," LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman said in the press box before the LSU-Arkansas game Friday. "I understand he may be leaving the Browns, but I don't think Nick's leaving this year." Saban was defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns from 1991-94 and has a lot of ties in Ohio. Saban's agent Jimmy Sexton was at the game Friday and said he had not heard of Davis' interest in the LSU job. The topic didn't come up in Saban's hurried press conference Friday after the game. If and when Saban does leave LSU, though, Davis will likely be a strong candidate to replace him, depending on where Davis is. Davis interviewed for the LSU job in November of 1999 with LSU Chancellor Mark Emmert and Stanley Jacobs, who was a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors at the time. "It was clandestine," Jacobs said. "We interviewed him in an airfield somewhere in the Miami area. We were very impressed with him. But he told us he wanted to go the NFL before too long." About a week after the interview, LSU hired Saban from Michigan State. "There would be no Nick Saban at LSU if Butch hadn't told them he wanted to go to the NFL," said Bertman, a former Miami assistant baseball coach who grew up in the Miami area. "Nick wasn't in the picture yet. But they loved Butch Davis. He's great. He cleaned up the Miami program." Davis led Miami to a Sugar Bowl victory over Florida after the 2000 season and was within range of a national championship but lost out in the polls to Oklahoma, which defeated Florida State in the Orange Bowl for the national title. Davis became the Cleveland Browns coach shortly afterwards. "Everyone wants to be at LSU now," Bertman said. "Everyone wants to coach here in all of the sports. Because this is the golden era of LSU sports."
Two points for you. One, I misread your post. Two, you got me a link. This isn't quite a direct qoute, but where there is smoke, there is probably fire. Still, Butch is getting a buyout of as much as $15MM from what I have heard. He might just take a year off.
direct quote? he couldnt put it out there officially til he was officially canned. that's what agents are for. this was 3 days ago. yeah its 12 mill i heard. nice little nest egg.
