I've never been a Jimbo Fisher fan and I'll say it again! The defense couldn't stop UT in the second half but they were giving up little dink passes. Tennessee chewed some clock going down the field. I felt pretty confident up 17 going into the 4th that UT wouldn't have enough time to score if we could control the ball on offense. But when the offense, with the talent LSU has, can't make a friggin' first down it leaves the defense tired and vulnerable. Not since Rohan Davey's senior year has LSU had a consistantly good offense. We continue to throw the screen and other dump passes that even I know is coming. Why are we not stretching the field? Why is Fisher not utilizing our speed and athletism at WR to open up the run? I was one Tiger fan who was less than enthused when Jimbo stayed around. I'd take a Morris Watts over a Jimbo Fisher any day.
I'm afraid to say out loud what I think of this coaching staff. I don't want to believe that we've taken such a big step backwards. I want to believe that all of this hurricane stuff and distractions are the reasons why we look so bad the first two games, especially on defense. It would be hard for anyone to defend this coaching staff's performance last night. I'll end this post now before I say something really stupid....
I really try not to ever criticize the coaching and always try to be positive.... But DAMN, soft defense sucks, and offensive play calling in the second half was awful. No way we should have lost this game....up 21 to 0 at the half IN Death Valley...no freakin way!!
Well, the defensive collapse wasn't just in the second half. Ainge and his WRs made our D look great in the first half by over/underthrowing and dropping lots of passes. They had plenty of room, they just didn't make the plays. It was the same sorry-ass scheme that got mauled by ASU, and was going against a much, much less potent offense. I shudder at the thought of what Chris Leak will do to them. Tennessee is a middle-of-the-road SEC team at best. I hate to think of where that puts us. Oh and why didn't the offense make it out of the locker room after halftime?
All this bitching about the defense and we overlook how sorry our offensive performance was because we are up 21 points. 14 friggin first downs? Good grief. That 21 point margin didnt have much to do with the offense except for the flea flicker and we sucked on the O side before and after that.
Anybody else scared of what Chris Leak will do to Pellini's defense? What about Jay Cutler at Vandy? That games not looking like such a gimme anymore.
I listened carefully to Miles' comments about the rest of the season. He used the word, "hopefully," twice. "Get after some people," was very short lived.
