Miles made a comment that Jones attending Spring practice will make him an every down player this year. Since most assumed that Coleman would take over at safety after he had such a great championship game replacing Steltz, the question becomes where does he play every down. I thought he would play nickel. I don't consider that an every down position, but perhaps Miles does. Or does he overtake Coleman for the safey job? Discuss amongst yourselves, I'm feeling a little verklempt!
In the LSUsports.net article, Miles said : I don't think that this says that he WILL become an every down player. I think that it means it would help him in his quest to become an every down player. Plus, his quote provides no time frame. He could mean that this work could help him for his senior year to become an every down player. Bottom line: this is coach-speak and means pretty much nothing to us. I think that it is a message to Chad (and other 2 sport athletes) that Chad made the right decision and these decisions don't have to be messy when they fall the way that Miles wants them to. But that is just IMHO. Anyway, anyone can be beaten out. Coleman is no lock for the safety job. I don't see why it would upset anyone if Jones were the safety and Coleman the nickle back.
No... the bottom line is that Chad will be the Rover in the 4-2-5 set LSU runs and will not be a "starter", but will play 90-95% of the time. Him not being the starting safety is no big deal, despite popular belief.
90% is a bit high - more like 60%, but can you clarify what you mean by Rover and the difference between this & nickelback?
I'd say more like 70-75 percent. He will be in on every nickel and dime, and he will also see some action at the SS spot.
90% is def high. I was just making a point that he will be out there, especially when the chips are on the line. And the only difference is it's sort of a hybrid CB/LB. It's basically a nickelback. He just will blitz more and be in the box more on run-downs.
You saved my azz from posting that, I'd thought the same, as you said too, based on what I've been "Hearing."
Since Curtis Taylor is a senior, you would think Jones would assume a starting safety spot at least by next year. If Jones plays nickel, instead of safety this year, it will probably still be an upgrade in our defense. McCray as many have previously mentioned, hurt us last year. Jones would be an upgrade if he can learn his assignments and not blow coverage. I am not a McCray fan, but I know he is doing his best. He blew some coverages, and when he was close to his assigned man he rarely was able to break up the pass. If Jones doesn't blow coverages or assignments his natural ability will help him make the plays McCray is unable to make. His ability to blitz occasionally from that position is also a big plus, flashback to the Sarah Jessica Parker game changing sack last year. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.
The McCray thing comes up often (read beaten to death) and I seem to recall the idea here that lack of depth/experience in the backfield forced the coaches to use him in a position he just didn't fit well in. Dude had 53 tackles this year, only prob was the ones he blew resulted in big plays. You should be a fan of every player on this team as long as they work hard and give all they have. To state otherwise is an attack on their character. End sermon
