Is it my imagination or does the OS development team always smell faintly of manure?

    BY John Murrell

The NCAA and PETA would probably raise a few objections, but the extreme sports sponsorship tie-up of the still young century is just waiting to be made: the University of Texas vs. Louisiana State in a Mascot Death Match -- longhorn vs. tiger -- brought to you by Microsoft and Apple. Considering that Bevo is an actual longhorn and Mike is a guy in a tiger suit, the contest would likely be predictive of at least the market share results as the two tech titans introduce new operating systems. Apple will be first out of the blocks, with Mac OS X "Tiger" hitting the shelves Friday (unless you happened to be an extremely lucky pre-order customer). Meanwhile, Microsoft is using the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference this week to lift the curtain a bit more on Longhorn, the next version of Windows, expected late next year. One thing the operating systems have in common is a nod to the threats and trials of online life these days. Tiger tackles information management with a search capability that breaks down the distinction between the PC's drive and the Net, while Longhorn highlights new security technology (though it isn't as ambitious as once planned). Stay tuned for endless incremental updates as this story develops.

Here was my e-mail to Mr. John Murrill, the author:

    Dude -

    Mike the Tiger at LSU:

    http://www.mikethetiger.com

IS a real freakin' tiger and actually eats Bevo's brothers on a REGULAR BASIS.

He is one of the few large felines actually kept as a university mascot in the US.

I would LOVE to see that match-up!!!!!!!!

Please check your facts the next time!

OR: You'll be TIGAH BAIT to THE Bayou Bengal!!!!

Other than THAT small error - GREAT DAILY COLUMN!

    The response from Mr. Murrell:

    Hi Jim,

Yep, your fellow alums have set me straight on Mike's true animal
nature. I'll run a fix tomorrow.

    Thanks for the note,

    John

Maybe my computer illiteracy is breaking through, but I don't get it... It does seem that he is giving us some props though, I mean he could have used Clemson or Mizzou for goodness sakes!

This is a locally generated column out here that I receive daily.

I was irritated that he wasn't aware of our live mascot.

Clemson and Mizzou don't even have live tigers...

As far as the operating systems gobbledegook...you had me at hello....

LOL! Well... obviously he didn't know WE had one either. I think it was a far reach anyway. It wasn't very newsworthy (form an aspiring journalist's POV.)

    Gotcha.

And here is, as Paul Harvey would say...

    ...the rest...of the story....

    In today's Silicon valley.com:

    http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/business/columnists/gmsv/11494101.htm

Errata: It has been brought to my attention by assorted alumni that LSU's mascot, Mike the Tiger, is in fact a very real, full equipped tiger (see "Is it my imagination or does the OS development team always smell faintly of manure?"). "The guy in the tiger suit," says reader Brent Dornier, "is nothing more than a target for those of us still sober enough to flex our motor skills to throw our drinks at after a touchdown is scored." This, needless to say, changes the odds in the proposed Mascot Death Match. ( )

The moral to the story is: All's well that ends well.

PS I like Brent Dornier. He's got a coonie name and a great outlook on the suit Mike..... :thumb:
