Re: Coaches' Buy Out clauses Dinardo paid his own buyout. As Terry said, large buyouts will not keep a coach from leaving for an even more profitable job. Many schools are trying incentives like big annuities for staying five years. Of course, Nick had a huge one at LSU that he walked away from. I think the $500,000 buyout is not to keep a coach from leaving, but to help LSU off the assistant coaches that they will also have to let go.

The USA Today article you provided as a link dated November 2006 says his UM buyout is $1.25 million. I wonder if his contract has been reworked since then and the clause dropped.
Re: Coaches' Buy Out clauses I did too and really don't follow the contract thing too closely but from the little I have, it seems LSU is very fair. We didn't impose the "Buyout" on Pokey's and allowed her to continue drawing her salary and her bonus for the team making the final four........or maybe we were trying to give her a lolipop since there were questions surrounding her release- and, again, I have no knowledge of the "Inside" story on that situation and don't recall what I'd read.

When we fired Price, the only thing the school ended up having to deal with were his two sons. Their contract called for a year, if I recall correctly, and basically they were given Admin jobs until they found further employment. That was so short lived I can't recall the specific details of it. Maybe Bayou can.
Jeremy Foley is the Athletic Director at UF. FWIW, on the trivia side of things, he's the only Div. 1 Ath. Dir. in history to have seen his dept. win 2 titles in both B-ball and football.
