actually.. i find 5 in 10 more impressive than 5 in 5... 5 in 10 means you had a sucessful program over 10 years... 5 in 5 means you have 2 sets of loaded classes..
I see your point, but you cant argue with 5 straight titles. Plus, by winning those 5, they won those in a 10 year span...haha:thumb:
USC won those titles back when their chief competition was Texas and the Maine Black Bears. Div I baseball bore no resemblance to what is is today. Although, 5 back to back is a significant accomplishment, it is less remarkable than Skip's 5 in 10 years against much stiffer competition. That said, Skip could not pull that off today. There are just too many good programs out there and the list is getting bigger.
There were also no scholarship limitations in those days so the top programs could sign all the top players.
Sorry guys I've been on the field with the UF players, coaches and staff. I must say, they are not one of my favorite groups. So for that reason I say GEAUX LONGHORNS!
When USC was winning their titles they were battling Wichita St, Long Beach St and Arizona St too. Their run was amazing and Dedeaux was the best coolege baseball had at the time. Stanky at South Alabama was my favorite coach though. It surprises me that Arizona St never won a lot more championships with all the amazing talent that has gone through there.
Let's just say the Spurrier ego has carried over onto the baseball field even though they have yet to win a title... :hihi: With Texas it is a little more tolerable because they actually have something to base their arrogance on. Rule #345 in the College Baseball Handbook- "You may not act like a pompous jerk if your program has yet to win a national championship."
I wouldnt say that USC's is any less significant than LSU's 5 because I do think the competition was pretty stiff back then too. It was just Texas who was a national competitor. When USC won the first of the 5 in a row, Texas hadnt won one in 20 years. There were over 10 different teams that won the CWS in that span. Both the LSU run and USC run was quite impressive.
It will be done again. Just a matter of time. Everything gets done again, all records fall. Now if they take setoriods out of Pro Baseball the home run record will stand for a very long time.
