  6. Looks like he got out just when he needed to. Williams was respected in Grambling, but still, in six years of coaching, with two SWAC titles, he beat Southern once. If he continued that trend, he would've met the same fate John Cooper met at Ohio State, because Cooper won a lot of games, but couldn't win the most important one (Michigan). This way, he goes out a hero, a great transitional man who restored Grambling State's competitive edge.

    I also could do without Williams' racial sermonizing, and I think, now that he's out of the way, the day draws closer when GSU will play more in-state 1-AAs and the SWAC will be either be fully integrated into D1-AA (that means going to the playoffs) or will all go 1-A. Williams was an outspoken advocate of maintaining the status quo at HBCUs.
