My major professor, now deceased, won the Distinguished Service Medal and five Purple Hearts among 8 other decorations in WWII. For a period just after the war before his discharge, he was made commander of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which he considered his highest honor.

My thought often go to him on Memorial Day. Most of the year I fly my purple and gold  flag from my porch. But the Stars and Stripes go up on Memorial Day. :usaflagwa

Red... My grandfather won the Navy Cross (two actually) in WWII ( the battle of the Leyte Gulf) and my uncle won two purple hearts and the bronze star as a USMC Sniper in viet nam... the only time the Purple and Gold come off the house is Memorial Day and 4th of July. My wife and I have made the trip to Arlington and am very humbled by the Tomb. How lucky are we? If you have ever been there you know what I mean:usaflagwa

God Bless those that provide the freedom that I raise my two girls under.

When I was stationed at Fort Bragg (five years ago now), Memorial Day was a holiday for us, but I used to put on my uniform and drive over the US Army Special Ops Command building where I worked so that I could watch the gathering of old and new Special Ops veterans who would gather to honor the fallen heroes of USASOC whose names are inscribed on the Memorial Wall right outside the building. It made me feel proud to be there . . . usually Ross Perot would show up and be a part of the gathering.
