1. and I'm hearing discussion on Dale Brown's freak defense...can somebody describe how it was?
  2. In a word... intense. But I'm also too young to remember it well--at least the better part of it.
  3. As far as I could tell, it was intense, seemingly random, and effective for spurts of fewer than five minutes.

In a nutshell, it was a variety of zone defenses, played depending on ball position. For example, if the ball came in on the right side, they would run a 1-2-2. Left would be a 2-1-2, etc. So you can change these up, and it's tough to read. It also seemed to energize the players, and they gave great effort.

If I'm off on this, I'm sure an older poster can expound on it. This is what I remember, though.

  5. Already posted sorry *edit
  6. Wow, thanx all that helped alot.
  7. The Freak defense would change either based on where the entry pass went to or Brown would call the defense from the sideline. The half ct 1-2-2, 2-3, 1-3-1, and Man were often interchangable. The defense was different on every entry pass...either to the right, left or middle, but they usually started in a 1-2-2 or 2-3 b/c it was easier to "shift" from. He would change the defenses up a good bit during the game. Sometimes he would have to change his defense singals if the other team was getting a read on what he was trying.

    Some of Brown's calls
    Folded Fist: Half Ct Man

Folded Fist Grabbed: Full Ct Man

Two Fists Above Head: 2-3 Match-Up

Two Fists Above Head, Pointed Thumbs: 2-3 trap

    Crossed Arms
    w/One Finger in Air: Box-and-One
w/Two Index Fingers, Two Thumbs Together: Diamond and One
w/Two Fingers in Air: Triangle and Two
w/Two Fingers, One Hand and Three Fingers, Other Hand: Man in Front, Zone in Back
