Led by backup quarterback and former New England Patriot Rohan Davey, the Dragons rallied to take a brief 35-33 lead with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter on a touchdown by wide receiver Chris Anthony. The Gladiators, however, answered immediately and recaptured the lead, which they didn't relinquish. Cleveland outscored the Dragons 28-14 in the final 16 minutes behind quarterback Raymond Philyaw, who threw for 240 yards and five touchdowns.

"I don't want to take anything away from Cleveland, but some of the things that went wrong were self-inflicted," Dragons head coach Weylan Harding said. "Lots of busted coverages and dropped balls."

Davey, a second-year player, finished 21 of 30 for 249 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, but it wasn't enough. He threw for 45 touchdowns last season, but the team went 1-9 in the games he started. In contrast, they went 4-2 with Garcia.

"We'll miss Aaron because of his leadership and experience, but we feel like Rohan has the tools and he can do it," Harding said. "He has the size and a huge arm, and he's a little more mobile than Aaron, so there are a couple advantages."

Davey, who became close with Garcia during training camp, said that although he was devastated to see his friend go down, he can only focus on the team's future.

"I'm ready to roll," he said after the game. "It's unfortunate how it happened, but for myself, it felt great being back out there. I think a quarterback's learning curve is one year. Mine was last year, so I'm ready to get it done if he's out for any length of time."

Matt Cassel happened. And then he couldn't beat out the human statue John Navarre for at least a backup spot with the Cardinals.
