no contraflow for hwy 90 out of morgan city? i deliver to houma and cutoff and on the way back home today, i noticed barriers in the median obviously to keep people from turning around. the barriers weren't set up yet, but they're there for a reason.
I don't know. Red55, you've been working at LSU for a while now, right? What about you others that have gone to LSU in recent history? From what I remember, LSU has canceled school for numerous pre-Katrina hurricanes that posed very little threat. Also, does anybody remember Hurricane Ivan -- that's the one that reminds me of Gustav... both were predicted to directly hit New Orleans every since they were in the area of Jamaica. With Hurricane Ivan, I remember people freaking out a lot more than they are now with Hurricane Gustav. Unlike Ivan and Gustav, Katrina wasn't predicted to hit New Orleans until about two days before the fact. Also, Katrina blew up into a bigger monster than anyone predicted. In addition, New Orleans' levee system was only designed to withstand a hit from a Cat-3, not a Cat-5 beast like Katrina. As for cancelling the game on Sat, the prediction I'm reading on the weather channel (released 35 minutes ago), says that Gustav won't even enter the Gulf of Mexico until Sunday.
Not very often, actually. Before 2005, I don't remember any football game being moved. Remember, its not the actual weather that is the issue here. Since Katrina, the contraflow evacuation and the prepositioning of supplies and shelters is the issue. A hurricane that misses Louisiana entirely may still cause a 72-hour evacuation from New Orleans nowadays. Worse we could also have to conraflow evacuate Southwest Louisiana, too. It's best to err on the side of caution, but it is also impoirtant not to jump the gun before the storm is even in the Gulf and order a New Orleans evacualtion that would actually get in the way of a southest Louisiana or Houston evacuation if the storm moves west.
This will be the soberest game in LSU history. Even I don't drink whiskey at breakfast. Also lots of no-shows from the coastal area who have bigger fish to fry, I'm thinking.
