Summer 2008:

"I'm happy those guys got me out there early so I could get a chance to get a feel and see what it's like," Russell said. "Now I kind of got an idea what it's going to be like and now I just get ready and try to prepare for it."

Kiffin said the difference in Russell's knowledge and comfort level is "night and day" from last season.

Russell wasn't asked to throw deep much in Thursday's practice and was off-target with some of his shorter throws, but Kiffin has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

"His confidence level is so much different," Kiffin said. "He knows his team, he knows his teammates, he has a different presence about him. Instead of being in the huddle and just trying to get the play call out and getting to the line of scrimmage, he's giving them reminders in there. He's way more comfortable than he was before."

JR has too much "tools" in his toolbox to not at the very least be an above average starting QB.

If McFadden is as good as I suspect he will be, this team can do big things and shock a lot of people.

Jeff George gets a very, very bad rap.

no doubt he should have done more as a No. 1 overall pick, but he had a career QB rating of 80 and had 154 career TDs to 113 INTs.

RAIDERS QUARTERBACK JaMarcus Russell emerged triumphant Thursday from his first career training-camp practice.

Which, of course, means the 6-foot-6 Russell didn't get taped to the goal post. He also didn't botch a snap (a staple of Raiders quarterbacks in recent seasons), he didn't get hurt, and he didn't have a pass intercepted.

Yep, Day 1 was a success for Russell, who missed last year's training camp during a contract holdout that led to his benching for most of his rookie season.

When he showed up at Thursday's camp christening, you'll be happy to know he more resembled a full-functioning franchise savior than a 300-pound whale.

JaMarcus makes life hard on himself by not "living the lifestyle" 12 months out of the year.

Sure, not all athletes are in game shape all year, but very few balloon to obesity during the offseason like JR does. lol

And that was it. Russell finished 14-of-28 for 140 yards and one interception, for a rating of 76.5 which, and we are not making this up, was the exact rating achieved by Lamonica for the Raiders in 1970.

Russell looked polished more often than not. He didn't look panicked as he went through his reads. Most of all, he fulfilled Kiffin's pregame mandate, which was to see where the Raiders' passing game stands as they prepare for the be-careful-out-there final exhibition game.

"The pass protection was not very good," Kiffin said. "We missed at least four blitzes. It was very discouraging. It reminded me of who we are."
