Is there anything afoot that you know of which would cause this resignation? http://www.al.com/sports/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/base/sports/1182503897223470.xml&coll=1 TUSCALOOSA - Less than a year after he received a handsome raise and a contract extension to 2011, Alabama baseball coach Jim Wells resigned unexpectedly Thursday. In a prepared statement released late Thursday afternoon, Wells, 52, gave no reason for stepping down. Wells' resignation also comes a year after he flirted with taking the job at LSU before deciding to remain at Alabama, where he is the Crimson Tide's all-time winningest coach.
I thought it extremely strange. Maybe Skip is having second thoughts on CPM? Naw, I kid. I hope CPM stays for a looonnnnnnggggg time. Great coach. Great guy. I have to say that LSU employs some VERY classy coaches.
David, the day Gattis knows something about the Alabama program in general is the day I'm an Auburn fan. :hihi: This story is about 4 months old, just not broken/released publically. There's nothing to see here. He just figured it was his time to back away. I'm by no means surprised. The comment about "flirting with the LSU job" is a crying, freaking...I'll leave this one alone. If you want some more details about it feel free to shoot me an email...you'd be surprised at who is involved with the new search.
I don't buy it, Terry. There is more to this story. What exactly was he backing away from? His career? He's in his early 50's and not ready for the pasture, he's the winningest baseball coach in Alabama history, and he's been to three CWS's. You can hardly say that he was underperforming. Squabble with the AD? Politics by the notorious BOT? Does he have a better offer somewhere? Did the football program just suck all of the cash away from the other major sports at Bama? Did he park in Nick's spot? Inquiring minds want to know.
He was unhappy at Bama and I dont think it goes any farther than that. I could be wrong but he was entertaining the LSU job when he visited with Skip. Why would you visit with Skip if you werent thinking about finding a new job? Some say it was because he was trying to help out Skip find a replacement for Smoke but that is comical. Why would you help out a division foe find a great coach. That is a whole other story. He was just unhappy.
I think it's pretty obvious what is going on at Bama. In general moral is very low among all Bama athletic programs because of 3 things: 1) The Saban Factor: Paying the most dollars in history by a University for it's football coach and assistants and getting a little above average personnel, which their overall records support "average". 2) The ego and arrogance that comes from Saban just ads to the low moral for all other athletic coaches and players. 3) Coach Wells works just as hard as any football coach for a fraction of the financial and university support from Bama. It's funny that Mal Moore spins a press release that there is Very High Interest in the Bama Baseball coaching job. http://www.al.com/sports/press-register/index.ssf?/base/sports/1182590238131540.xml&coll=3 When ever you are in trouble you immediately start putting out how well things are going. If things are going so well you don't have to say anything. I feel sorry for Bama fans, I thought they had reached bottom after probation and Coach Fran. I think they are headed for a new low and possible total collapse of their entire athletic program if Saban does not win quick. It could get very ugly, very quick.
Terry....you are gonna make a great straight man for SaBear:hihi: The hands on betting for the new guy is Troy State's coach according to my bama friends.
