I got into a discussion with a good friend of mine about schools that use colors for mascots. I had done some post-graduate work at N.Y.U. I informed him that the N.Y.U. teams (which used to be a power in basketball back in the '40's and '50's) were known as the Violets. Without skipping a beat or even thinking about it, he replied, "So I guess that would make the black N.Y.U. students 'AFRICAN VIOLETS'". I laughed my a$$ off.
