This is a young team that could really improve and win 10 games or more. We know the talent is there and we know there are several really good coaches on staff.

OR, this season could go south on us and we end up 7-5.

We've played 1 game, and we won it, against a ranked BCS team on a neutral site.

We didn't lose at home to Jacksonville State.

This is what runs through my mind when the more deranged segment of our fanbase gets "theoretical" about firing Miles. Their fantasies run wild. We will literally have our pick of elite coaches who would literally beat down the door to coach LSU. Don't you know Saban is just waiting for the door to open to make his triumphant return?

And yet when this talk runs rampant, I can't get Nebraska out of my mind. They fired Frank Solich after 7-7 and 9-3. Didn't just fire Solich, fired the entire coaching and football support staff, ended their legendary walk-on program, and tore down 75 years of triple-option and blackshirt tradition.

And when the Big Red Husker jet started flying around the country, they found out nobody would touch that job with a ten foot pole. Had to settle for, what, their 11th choice? They are just now back in the Top 10 to start a season for, what, the first time since 2002?

Miami pulled the same trigger on a national championship coach, and paid the same price.

Texas A&M thought they could do better than the winningest coach in school history, forced out R.C. Slocum, and got a revolving door at head coach, 77-0 beatdowns, and near total irrelevancy imposed on them by the football gods as punishment.

If I'm LSU A.D., I ain't firing a coach who is practically money to bring home 8 wins a year. I don't care how loud the fans scream. The fans can chillax. You see, we did that to Cholly Mac, and wondered in the wilderness of loserdom for 20 years. Remember that? We've been down that road before. What coach wants to walk into this coaching meat grinder, where a nine-win season two years removed from a national title has the fanbase calling for your head? Think Chris Pedersen wants any part of this fan base? Not when he can be King and God in Idaho.

You can't win 'em all, you can't be a contender for crystal every single year, and you cannot expect perfection from 18-22 year old young man-boys.

My gosh this board needs a valium. Ridley holds onto the ball and finishes that drive late in the 3rd, we win 44-17 and we're not even having these inane conversations. Some people don't realize how much 3 or 4 plays can change the complexion of a ballgame, nor do they account for the fact that these are kids. Oh, but I'm sure it's Les' fault Ridley fumbles.

I also love how North Carolina, coached by Butch Davis, with multiple NFL draft picks, and recent very highly ranked recruiting classes, has zero depth, garbage reserves, and once you get past the 13 players that didn't play, why, there is no difference at all between them and Nicholls State, so we should have won 72-0. Seriously people? Seriously?

Me neither. Bo Pelini's contract expires the same day as Miles. Falling short on SECCC coupled with little signs of developing LSU talent back into the powerhouse :miles: received, then I will be glad to buy 2 windows on Tiger Stadium in an effort to bring Bo back to Death Valley. I would rather not see that happen but if we are singing the same blues mid season next year, well, I like Bo. If Bo does not get his own :crystal: by then, well, Bo might like us too. A ton of football is gonna happen before any kind of reality is worth discussing.

I believe that Husker nation is looking good for the Big 12 North this year. They better cause they are looking to face a big 10+ schedule before long. Will be interesting to see how Bo will handles the transition.

I see your point but let me play devils advocate. Lets look at Florida. They had a beloved coach leave for the NFL in Spurrier. (and later comes back to coach another SEC school in their division) Florida then hires Zook. Zook was a great recruiter and pretty good coach but was falling short of expectations. There was a huge fan outcry to replace him so they did. Then they went and found a smart up and coming couch in Meyer. Many thought firing Zook was a stupid move but it worked out pretty good for them.

See any parallels?

The difference is Miles won a lot more than the Zooker. Zook never sniffed the SEC East championship. Miles won the west twice, the SEC once, and the NC once.

Zook finished 1st in the East his second year and was just a tiebreaker away from the SEC championship. He also never had a losing record. Obviously Miles has been more successful that Zook but that's not the point. Its a counter example to those posted above. A situation where a school replaced a winning coach, that wasn't wining enough for the fan base, and was successful doing it.

I am in 100% agreement that to fire Miles just for the sake of firing him is a terrible idea. But realistic chance hire a guy like Chris Petersen then I have no problem with replacing Miles.

I will repeat myself. It will be when he is gone, that many will, just then, realize what we had. I, like many, am not 100% satisfied with what has transpired over the past 2 yrs. Nor with some of what I witnessed last Sat. That said, I think the only possible move to replace Miles would have to be one that is a decisive upgrade. I don't think some rising star or some great asst coordinator is the solution. It would have to be some proven coach that has shown they are better than Miles. Thats, just my opinion, and my issue is that I just don't see that coach being available, nor becoming available for a program that fires a 10+ win/season coach. Those 5-6 coaches that are proven better than Miles aren't and won't be available, at any price, under those circumstances. Is there another Urban out there, sure there is, but with the SEC the way it is now this is not the place to try and become a great coach. The landscape is way too tough to try and become the next Urban Meyer story in the SEC.
