I thought if a player gets in for even a single play then he cannot redshirt.

I have been saying this for awhile now.

I heard the surgery is scheduled as well.

Is that a certainty? What's his injury?

    Yep

The scaphoid bone (also called the navicular bone) is one of eight carpal (wrist) bones. Also one of the slowest healing bones in the body. Some need surgery some don't just depends if it heals correctly by itself but if it doesn't it can cause problems in the long-run. He will probably get a temporary screw put in and the rehab is usually 3-6 months. The injury occurred halfway through his senior season.

I thought there was some little rule about being able to redshirt if a player only saw limited action in the first three games?

    1 play = no redshirt

That rule was changed 2 or 3 years ago.

Now it is 1 play as TB3 said and you can only qualify for a Medical Hardship Waiver if player does not play past the 3rd game.
