Found this thread in USC forum..........LSU getting some love. http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=15#S=15&F=1720&T=438892 Anyone care to chime in?
In my experience, the loud stadiums are those with: 1. The fans are close to the field. 2. A big, fully-enclosed lower bowl 3. Coonasses. LSU stands alone in having all three.
That was what I posted in that thread, although the stadium certainly accounts for some (acoustics) our fans are rabid when it comes to our football teams and we'll rock any stadium.
The fans account for the rowdy atmosphere, but the loudness comes from the acoustics of the stadium. I've been in big stadiums that weren't really loud because of mostly open endzones and because the grandstands were well back from the field. They don't get that reverberation that Tiger Stadium gets. The lower bowl at Tiger Stadium is huge. It was one of the biggest in the country before the upper decks were even added added. The upper deck didn't really add much noise to Tiger Stadium. And the stands are very close to the field.
To me, it's more of the game itself. The SECCG in ATL can get up there, but without a good matchup it dies. The game we played against UF in '99 in Ben Hill was loud, no doubt. Neyland...the only thing that is loud, to me, is that damn Rocky Top being played...and it's more annoying than loud. Little Rock can rock, as can Georgia's home games. 4 atmosphere's that simply don't qualify are UK, MSU, Ole Miss and Vandy. I suspect we'll see our stadium being talked about soon. The addition is going to hold the noise in, but as Red mentioned the field is seperated from the fan base to the point it depends on the game. Florida '05 was loud. South Carolina? Their entrance, yes. The crowd factor? Even when they came from behind and beat Alabama back in fRan's tenure I wasn't so impressed...and I was close to the field on the enclosed side of that stadium. I've never been to a game in Death Valley by a lake (Clemson) but have heard some loud concerts there. Does that count? Something I've wondered...do Syracuse games get loud? Their spring game didn't, only @ 2000 showed up. I wonder about the crowd participation during an actual game.
my rank of the stadiums i've been in: 1)LSU! duh? i've pretty much been to every home game since '94 and i still believe the loudest game was the "bring back the magic" game against AU in '05 (drama till the end) although the two biggest bursts of noise i've ever heard were: in no order- tommy banks TD vs fla in 97, toefield up the sidelines against tenn. in 2000 (i think it was 00), and skyler green's td catch against UGA in 03. 2) tennessee- just cuz of sheer numbers. put another 10-15 thousand fans in any of the other top 4 and tenn would drop. 3) auburn- it helps that the games are usually great. they should be #2 on this list. 4) florida- the stadium is set up horribly for the visiting fans which is great if you're a home fan. still, i guess i expected an intimidating venue. the fans are much worse outside of the stadium, than in it. 5) texas a&m- despite all the summer camp/cult cheers, it can get pretty loud. 6) georgia- i hoped for more so far as crowd noise, i've been there twice LSU was 0-2 for these visits, but the crowd wasn't too impressive. 7) bama- the disclaimer on this is that i have only been here once before the expansion, the week before they played us they lost to La. Tech and i think we shut them out(i think it was 97), probably not a true sample but i can only go with what i know. 8) texas- went in the 90's against texas tech. UT should be louder than it is, they had a decent season that year. 9) lefire: i didn't go in '03, i figure if i did, they'd be higher on this list. 10) miss st.- cowbells, cowbells, cowbells. 11) tulane- i went to the last LSU-TU game there (minus the LSU fans, its quiet) but also went to abunch of games my fresh-soph yr when LSU was away or off. the most memorable thing in about 8 games there: rice's band. 12) USM- whadya expect from cusa? i'm sure i'm leaving some stadium out. always wanted to go to carolina and arkansas but haven't been able to make it yet.
I've been to Tennessee. It was the loudest collective golf clap I've ever heard. The average fan age must be 62. I agree with Terry. This all depends on the game. Of the places I've been. LSU - Of course. Last year sucked because of the schedule but the Ole Miss game got pretty loud at the end. It may have been the first time all season I almost passed out from screaming and jumping. Auburn - It was in 99 on a student bus trip. Auburn fans are the greatest because they were leading the entire game but still got angry because we were having a good time. Even after the game they were flipping us off and giving us blank stares because we were still cheering and having fun. Good times. Little Rock - It was the game where they beat us in the last few seconds. For such a small stadium it was pretty impressive. Georgia - They game where they romped us like 35 - 0 and Xavier Carter took a knee on the one. Doh! They were pretty rowdy. Alabama - National Championship year we beat them pretty soundly. I believe Bama went for a field goal in the final minutes to avoid a shut out. LSU fans got pretty loud at that point but other than that Bama fans didn't have much to cheer for. Tennessee - Like I said before. 104,000 golf claps with sweaters tied around the waist. Mississippi State - 2005. I think they scored a touchdown on a long pass play to open the game. They were loud after that, but then we shut them up. Ole Miss - 2005. Froze my balls off. I'll put these separate since they aren't the typical saturday campus experiences. SECCG's and Bowls Sugar 03' LSU\OK - Duh SECCG LSU\Tennesee 01' - It was a great game. Plus it's in a dome Sugar LSU\Illini 01' - LSU fans were happy to be back in the sugar bowl. SECCG LSU\Georgia 05' - Georgia home game basically and they tore us a new one. SECCG LSU\Georgia 03' - Sat with the students. That always helps. Sugar LSU\ND 07' - ND fans suck. Peach LSU\Miami 05' - The quietest of the dome games. Capital One Iowa\LSU - Fun when JR brought us back. Then they shut us up. :bncry: Cotton Texas\LSU - Texas fans had fun.
Completely agree. In the Pac10, Autzen is the loudest by a large margin even though they sell out at just 45-50k. The seats are right on top of the field and it's a very tight bowl. While the Colisseum sells out around 90-92k and it was louder last year than I can ever remember, it still isn't that loud because the seats are further away. Had dinner not long ago with my dad and one of his frat brothers who has lived all over the country and been to games in just about every major stadium. He said without doubt, Death Valley is the loudest. He said some other stuff too but I'll just stick with the noise factor. :thumb:
The 'Cuse stinks now, but I was at a game in 1997 or 1998. Donovan McNabb beat Virginia Tech (or was it West Va.?) on the last play of the game. Very, VERY loud.
