Miles Addresses Position Battles

Good read on QB, WR, FB battles; Alexander and Chad Jones:

Freshman Russell Shepard will play at quarterback in spring practice, coach Les Miles said Thursday night.

“Keeping him at quarterback this spring is certain,” Miles said. “There may be some other opportunities for him to move around a little bit and look at him in some other spots, but he’s got to develop. He’s got a great enthusiasm for learning.”

At fullback, Miles said Quinn Johnson was a force in LSU’s two-running back system, and the team has a few options for a new fullback, including freshman tight end Tyler Edwards or “a mobile offensive lineman.”

Barksdale is at RT, I don't think he'll be the "mobile OL".

There's a walkon OL (Richard Dugas) being tried out at FB. It aint big Joe. LOL.

A light offensive lineman (6-1, 275) can make a fine blocking fullback if he has quick feet, and many centers do. His father, Bob Dugas, was the LSU All American offensive tackle that made an All-American running back out of Charles Alexander. Maybe blocking is in the blood.

The paper today said:

As LSU looks to replace fullback Quinn Johnson, the loss of Ridley also affected that part of the depth chart. However, Richard Dugas, a former center who has moved to fullback, appears to be making strides.

“We threw a ball to Richard Dugas at fullback today. I thought that was a pretty exciting piece,” Miles said. “He’s really done a remarkable job for four practices. It’s going to be good.”

Dugas, who will be a junior, is listed as 6-foot-1, 275 pounds.

“With Richard Dugas stepping in a little bit at fullback and Charles Scott, I think we’ll be fine there, in a two-backfield set,” Miles said.

Like Scott and Ridley, Williams is another option as tailback shifting to fullback. Fullback Dominique Allen, who signed last month, will arrive in the fall. And tight end Tyler Edwards will get a look as an H-back/fullback.

I've always been a fan of throwing to the fullback. I love to see the big guys get the ball in space.

I hope Dugas works out. I bet this kid is ecstatic about a chance to gain playing time. You wouldn't think we could throw to him much, but who knows. I do not think that K. Williams would be a good blocking FB judging by his running style. He doesn't seem to be as much of a bull as Scott. I think Scott would be good, but he is the number one tailback so you don't want to wear him out too much just to block.
