Why do they call it the Ticketguardian 500 when the race is only 312 miles?

It's a one mile track. 312 laps. There is a race at Bristol they call the Food City 500 that is only 250 miles but they race 500 laps on the half mile track.

 

500 Kilometers?? Do that math too and let me know
