Well, even if it's per kick, it is still skewed because of our lack of opportunities. If you have only 6-7 chances, 1 bad one can ruin the whole average... Just like if a pitcher pitches 8 scoreless innings in a row, then gives up 5 in the next, his ERA is 5.00, which looks bad, but isn't indicitive of how well he pitched... And there are a number of NFL teams who don't have an automatic kicker from 50 out, so you're expecting too much there
Uhhhh, we've had 16 punts which is about average for a team in its 5th week. It's not about one short punt ruining the average. Our #74 net punting is about a bunch of average punts and a whole bunch of long returns.
You're not taking inot consideration that we're also punting onto the short side of the field. How often have we been pinned deep enough to get a long punt off? Think about it, if CJ punts from the 50 and it goes in to the endzone, that's a net 30. Even if he drops it dowm at the 10-15 yd. line, it's not a great net avg. But if he punts from his own 20 it's probably a net 50.
About half of them. Every team faces the same risk when punting inside the 50, amigo. LSU's net punting problem is that we are allowing 18.2 yards per return on our punts.
Last year Jackson was very good at keeping his punts out of the endzone, this year he hasn't been. A lot of it is luck, some of it is good coverage, some of it is just punting the darn ball to hard. We have however had some poor punt return coverage which is troublesome with all of the speed we have out there.
