Baton Rouge is still mentioned as the largest market that has no professional baseball. The Nolan Ryan group was in town again recently trying to find a home to play ball. It seems the two hottest sites are downtown on the riverfrontand in Livingston parish. Now it has been announced that LSU is going to build a $23 million baseball stadium on campus instead of renovating Alex Box. The fact is, the stadium proposed for a AA-minor league team would be located just two miles north of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive at the bridge. The idea has been discussed as to how LSU and the minor league team could share a new stadium since the seasons barely overlap.
This idea is of course "out-of-the-box" thinking. And we need more of this type thinking in Baton Rouge.
Did you know the University of Kentucky plays basketball at the civic center arena in downtown Lexington? Or that Georgetown shared an arena with pro basketball and hockey? Maryland also plays its games in the Comcast Center, located just off the Terps' campus.
LSU could practice at Alex Box and play games in the new stadium just two miles away. There could be a shuttle running downtown for students.
A downtown stadium could have a major impact on development and be a draw for downtown businesses, as well as become a venue for other events like outdoor concerts and charitable events.
You might be thinking, why not let the minor league team play at LSU? The reasontoo many restrictions on advertising, concessions and other events on campus.
There is no doubt that LSU and Athletic Director Skip Bertman have reasons as to why a new baseball stadium is in LSU's best interest, but what about the interest of the community? When Mark Emmert was chancellor, he had the incredible foresight and courage to move the LSU Museum of Art from its intended location on LSU property at the Rural Life Museum to atop the Shaw Center. It is spectacular and an asset to the communityand to LSU. LSU should consider the same concept with the need for a new stadium. How can LSU baseball and minor league baseball team up to win for the capital city? Mayor Holden said he is looking for anchors for downtown. Here is a good prospect. If LSU builds its own new stadium, the probability increases dramatically that the new minor league ballpark will end up in Livingston Parish, not far from the Bass Pro Shop.
