These guys are supposed to be in CONTROL right? Most of you LSU fans are REALLY versed in your knowledge. Can we agree that the refs COULD call some penalty on almost every play run in a game. Offensive holding--defensive holding--off sides--UNSPORTSMAN LIKE CONDUCT--Somehow, they have to let the kids play..............this call in the Tenn/Fla game was totally away from the action on the field. It had NO-NONE-NADA- effect on the play. With that much on the line, I think the ref (seeing the action on the other side of the field) should have had his attention elsewhere. It does make one question, is this on the up and up? Has someone's integrity been tarnished? I think the ref should have said, "Sorry guys. Take to the parking lot." N-O---F-L-A-G
All the ref needed to do in the UF-UT game was rush in there after the first head slap and seperate them. No flag was needed. Football is a contact sport full of emotions. Its not like he punched him.
The flag wasn't the real issue..... it's that the crew failed to start the clock immediately, instead choosing to stop the clock until the snap. Being able to burn the additional 21 to 23 seconds off the clock would've likely changed the outcome of the game for UF.
Your right normally this is what they do unless it's getting out on hand by happening on every play. With the time left and a change of possesion on the brink it was a useless call. I like the part about the officials saying oops we made a mistake. However the bowl picture and NC and SECCG face just changed very early in the season.
The ref who blew the call was Bobby Moreau, a former LSU player. The entire crew has been "reprimanded" but the policy does not allow for disclosing what the punishment was. Thankfully, as an LSU-ex, Moreau cannot work LSU games.
Another ref question. Why wasn't the defensive player flagged for tackling Broussard out of bounds. The ref was starring at the play and did nothing. I remember a game a couple of weeks ago. I beleive it was the Tenn vs UNLV game. As the Tenn running back went out of bounds, the defenseive back pushed him with one hand. The Tennessee guy did not fall, in fact there was no visible effect of the contact, yet the flag came out and a fifteen yard penalty was assessed. Another was a play at the end of the third quarter of LSU vs Auburn. It was third and long. The pass went to Bowe who was right at the first down stripe. The Auburn defensive back hit Bowe driving him back behind the first down marker. Am I wrong in thinking progress is marked where the ball is caught and not where the tackler drives him to the turf? The ref marked the ball a yard behind where Bowe caught the ball.
Broussard was tackled very very far out of bounds and there should have been a flag in my opinion but that is one of many missed calls in every game. On the Bowe catch it was a bad spot, however I think he was a little short of the first even if the ball had been spotted properly. On a catch like that at full speed with no replay as in any full speed play spots are missed quite often. The Tackle of Broussard was just poor judgement by the ref or poor training by the league because he was tackled a good 8 yards out of bounds. The thing about calls like that is they usually even out in the end. LSU must learn to overcome a few bad calls and still get the job done like every other team in the country. Calls like the personal foul in the Fl/Tn game are more rare and very inexcusable. In my opinion that ref should not see the field again as he clearly and it looks like purposly made a bad call that affeted the outcome of the game.
If it was a judgement call, say the back made it to the 33 yd line, and the ref marked a foot short.......that's human error. Sorry.....but this ......I just would love to hear the refs explanation to his boss.
I suspect the entire crew was reprimanded because they failed to recognize one of the fundamental rules in all levels of football - the clock doesn't stop after a running play that fails to make a first down!
