Hey Peabody- You lived through the Orange Bowl. What's the low-down truth about Pellini as a coach? OU's defense wasn't too shabby with the exception of the last 2 NC games and the Kansas State 03 game. Did OU play the same "scheme" that we saw in Tempe last weekend?
Pellini was an assistant to an assistant that runs Stoops' defense, OU did not run Pellini's defense and Pellini didn't run the OU defense. However Pellini does have a good resume and may be just fine at LSU only time will tell.
That's right, and not only that, he only coached the DBs. So basically it was a bastardized defense with Stoops/Venebles calling the majority of the shots, and Pelini trying to 'fit in' his style of DB coaching into that scheme. Seemed to work pretty good for the most part, but like ASU, you have to give credit to USC for just being good and calling a great game (*coughnormchowcough*.
That's because that scheme is popular and proven. Pete Carroll runs it, Monte Kiffin runs it at Tampa Bay, and George Seifert won the Superbowl with it. Pelini learned under all of these people. The difference is, the players actually executed the defense with these teams..something I expect our athletes will do when they are fully immersed and comfortable in it.
Pellini was in charge of defensive backs last season. A few of the coaches and all the defensive backs did not like or care for his schemes. I think they were way too complicated are somesuch. Anyway, the players never could get comfortable with it. I will find out more and probably better info to answer your question. Anyway suffice to say the DBs and a few of the coaches were glad to see him go.
right, and he was their "co-defensive coordinator"....a title that doesn't give him total credit for their defensive highlights, but certainly doesn't make him the "scapegoat" for their low points (Orange Bowl) either.
"Too complicated"???? :shock: I say that in shock because he refers to it (his defense) as "simplified". Was Saban's defense THAT complex that our new defensive coordinator refers to his as simpler???
