bhelm, I like the post and- at the risk of being toasted- I'll say this in regards to our fan base. Although I know it's not members of this forum who are the ones crossing the line with visiting fans, there is a lot of truth to it. I've heard horror stories, on other boards, and from kids to "Go up north" to play ball, that are hard to believe cause, and as I told them, I've never witnessed the behavior they've experienced.

I'm all for supporting our Tigers and am not talking about the normal "Tigerbait" chants, etc. but there is a line that is sometimes crossed by college football fans in all big-time program fan bases.
Don't think we can can be responsible or can control it but we shouldn't deny it either.

I think sometimes some get just a little delusional and forget it is just a game. The die-hard fans who support their teams as we do ours get perceived as the enemy. At the end of the day we are all Americans and our enemy is not each other.

Just as an example, I used to hate USC, and everything it represented. I sure seeing USC makes some want to puke. Since visiting their forum, I have come to like many of their posters. Yesterday, in posting with them about the situation with LSU, you may be surprised at what some of them had to say:

These greedy agents are the root of all of these problems...There needs to be a national licensing program with an overseeing body akin to the legal bar.
With millions of dollars and carreers at stake these agents need to be held accountable. I know there are rules of law and conduct in effect now but they need to be administered with some teeth by an organization with real oversight...

lsutiga, the damage looks containable if this part is true:

LSU said the student-athletes invited to Gaines' home didn't realize an agent would be there, and the university said there was no evidence that the student-athletes violated the law.

Kinda what happens when you take away the students and give the seats over to big dollars. You take away the core of the stadium and you take away the people that don't care if it rains, etc. Its about Saturday night in Tiger Stadium regardless of win, lose, or whatever.

I live in Houston now and don't think its just LSU football as this is happening everywhere. The fan base for the Texans as an example is such a bitter lot except for the hardcore fans.

You can see your point in the Longhorn and Aggie programs as well. While you have the students who are still rabid fans regardless. Sad to say but their fans are also tearing them apart for any little thing. Seems to be the way it is now.

I still remember growing up with LSU football as a young kid with my parents and their friends scheduling everything during the football season by the Tiger home games. Hell Tulane and LSU were the big thing. No one cared if LSU didn't fare so well all the time but they had better beat Tulane. My father would not speak to his lifelong friends for weeks because they were Tulane Fans. I just remember everything and all the people waiting for Saturday nigt, if they won man it was on but even if they lost it wasn't that bad cause you know Charlie Mac was the man in their eyes regardless of what happened and he would right the ship. Let him deal with the football and the coaching and my folks would cheer and scream

I spent many a night in Tiger Stadium as a young boy with the cub scouts and going to games with my parents. Even when in college at Nicholls state we would drive to the stadium to go to games. Didn't care who won it was Tiger Stadium on Saturday night and regardless of the weather or whomever we were playing we cheered and screamed then partied with the enemy after.

Just doesn't seem the same now when I go home during Tiger football weekends.

Let's face it, bulletin boards has made it easy for fans to vent & to get influenced by the masses. We get so high up for these games that when we lose it's a huge downer, especially if you were drinking all day. Then we get home & get on the boards & just let lose on the coaches (I'm very guilty of this), players, & ourselves.

I've been a tiger and saints fan since I can remember. It doesn't matter to me if the Saints or Tigers never win a game, I will still be a fan and still buy my kids shirts/hats etc for xmas.

Completely Agree! With the emergence of sports radio and the internet/blogs/forums more people have an avenue to express their opinion, no matter how ignorant or intelligent they may be. I personally have less patiences for the ignorant.

just because there are more avenues and wider mediums available to express one's opinion doesn't mean that manners should be permitted to be optional.

I suspect the issue on forums/boards has much more to do with anonymity than it does the numerous changes in society. The less mature souls among us tend to show less respect to each other when they know there is little risk of repercussion for their actions.

with regard to Tiger Stadium, and IMHO, it's a terrific experience once inside the stadium. But for visitors, the experience outside the stadium is the only thing holding back LSU's Gameday experience from being the preeminent venue in all of football. The sad part about it is that many of the ones that are the cause of the problem aren't even there to go to the game, they're there to get their party on at the tailgate.

I've shared my personal experiences here before, so most of you know that I'm fond of my trips to BR, but my biggest dissapointment is watching some of the poor behavior occur while law enforcement officials watched on with amusement.

Just my $0.02, but it wouldn't take much effort to cure the problem and turn Tiger Stadium into an experience that all fans would put on their list of "Things To See Before I Die"

I agree that changes in society have something to do with it. I do see impatience but not apathy. However, I sometimes talk frankly about what I see going on with the team, the way they play, the way they are coached, the administration, decisions, etc. Having said that, It's like two friends disagreeing. At the end of the day, I am a rabid Tiger fan and will always be. I kinda think the critical analysis at times is just a way to say...I AM a fan, and I DO care about what is happening with the team and only want the best.

It's great to be a tiger fan. I think about the analogy. I can say something bad about my family, but if you do, you're in for a fight.

    Geaux Tigers!

Good analogy. I agree with everything except the changes in society. Sure society as a whole has changed but I don't think people are more ignorant than 40 years ago as some posters have stated. I'm not that old but anyone who says they didn't have critics and a$$'s 40 years ago is a liar. I mean there is no reason to this logic. For one there are more people in this country today and therefore there is a pretty good chance there will be more bad apples. There is also more ways for them to have their voices heard now than there was back then. And usually people who are happy about something don't feel the need to go on message boards or call talk shows and express it. This is why it seems like people are more ignorant than 40 years ago, but IMO they are equally ignorant and just have a louder voice.
