Alabama held its first scrimmage last Saturday. The Tide offense ran 52 pass plays out of 83 total snaps from scrimmage and predominantly lined up in the one-back, four-receiver set that head coach Mike Price ran at Washington State. Brodie Croyle was 8-of-12 for 76 yards, senior-to-be Dre Fulgham led all receivers with six grabs for 54 yards, and redshirt freshman Kenneth Darby was the leading rusher with 35 yards on seven carries. Shaud Williams had six carries for 21 yards. ... Arkansas began its spring workouts this past Sunday. The Razorbacks, however, will be without starting cornerbacks Ahmad Carroll and Eddie Jackson and starting wideout Richard Smith for most of the spring as the three are competing on the school?s track team. .... Auburn?s new behemoth junior-to-be running back Brandon Jacobs put his talents on display during a scrimmage this past weekend. Jacobs rushed for 88 yards on 21 carries and delivered a few punishing blows to some would-be tacklers over the course of the afternoon. Sophomore-to-be Tre Smith also ran the ball effectively with 75 yards on 21 carries, and last season?s leading rusher, junior-to-be Ronnie Brown, added 31 yards on nine carries. Carnell ?Cadillac? Williams, however, was held out of practice. At quarterback, junior-to-be expected starter Jason Campbell worked mostly with the first team and was 9-of-13 with one touchdown. Redshirt freshman-to-be Josh Sullivan was 10-of-15 for 185 yards, freshman Brandon Cox completed 2-of-3 passes for 16 yards, and redshirt freshman-to-be Wesley Hill also completed 2-of ?3 passes for 14 yards. The Tigers will scrimmage again this Saturday. ... Georgia?s junior-to-be starting receiver Fred Gibson, who was also a member of the Bulldogs? much troubled hoops program, was back running routes with the football team yesterday. Gibson also indicated that he doesn?t plan to play basketball again next season and is going to be focusing on football for the remainder of his college days. ... To help make up for the loss of Kelley Washington and Jason Whitten, Tennessee senior-to-be safety Mark Jones and junior-to-be tailback Derrick Tinsley are experimenting at wide receiver this spring. Tinsley tied for the team lead in receiving scores last year with five, whereas Jones was originally recruited as a wideout. ... Sophomore-to-be running back Gerald Riggs Jr. was a standout during the Vols? 60-play scrimmage on Monday. Riggs rushed for over 100 yards, including two runs of 40 yards, and displayed his power and agility, which kept defenders away. Juniors Cedric Houston (5 yards per carry) and Jabari Davis (40-yard TD run) also turned in solid outings. ... Vanderbilt began the second half of spring practice yesterday with the return of 2002 starting tailback Norval McKenzie. McKenzie, who is entering his junior season, was the Commodores? leading rusher before going down with a fractured leg in practice prior to the sixth game of last season. ... Highly touted Class of 2002 signee Grant Brigham announced that he is leaving the Commodore team. Brigham, who was recruited as a wide receiver, played mostly on special teams last season, but missed four games due to a shoulder injury and was suspended for one game for disciplinary reasons.
