I liked a few of Springsteen's big hits in the 80s but otherwise never got into his music. I know his E Street band gets a lot of praise but the general "sound" never spoke to me much. He's playing near my house tomorrow night (outdoor Pavilion) so I'm going to go out to the park to listen with a few friends. What are a few songs over the past decade that I should familiarize myself with? If you are a big Springsteen fan, why?
I don't get Springsteen. Why is he put on such a pedestal? Like Kiss, I will never understand why Bruce Springsteen is so popular. I get most other bands/artists that have been wildly successful....just not Kiss and Springsteen.
I like KISS, always have but not much on Springsteen, always thought he was overrated as a song writer. Funny, the best song he ever wrote turned into a one hit wonder by another band.
You uppity white dudes don't understand the blue collar work ethic of the Boss. His songs praise the everyday middle class American ideals that made this country great. Born to Run, Nebraska, Darkness on the Edge of Town, the River, and Born in the USA were classic top 500 all time albums. Some of his songs sound so simple yet are amazing in their breadth and complexity, like Thunder Road. Tl:dr Bruce wrote a song about how shitty New Jersey is. It was so awesome the Governor of New Jersey proclaimed as the rock anthem of New Jersey.
The everyday middle class American ideals does sound like a good thing to write songs about. Sometimes it seems like most of today's music has no substance. I've tried listening to his channel on Sirius lately but most of the songs I hear make me want to change the channel. I've heard he's really good live but probably will not look for a ticket tonight (unless my friends really push for it). We can listen at the park for free and alcohol is also allowed. Beers are about $8 at the show. Do you have about three songs that were written since 2000 that you can recommend?
Springsteen plays rock and roll. If you like rock and roll, you will like Springsteen. The early albums are his best, especially Born to Run. Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle Born to Run Born in the U.S.A. is a good later Springsteen album. if you only like post-2000 stuff, Springsteen ain't your guy. And Rock and Roll ain't your genre.
I don't know your taste in music, but I really liked the Seeger Sessions album, which was old timey string music. Check out "How can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live" from the 2006 Jazz Fest on youtube. "Last to Die" and "I'll work for your Love" off of Magic "World's Apart" off of the Rising "The Wrestler" don't remember the album "My city in ruins" don't know the album More than you asked for. Magic is my favorite of this post 2000 albums.
Forgot all about The Wild, The Innocent & E Street Shuffle. Rosalita is an awesome song, and it established Clarence Clemons as a signature sound of E Street. It is up there with Jungle Land, Born to run and Thunder Road.
