You finish out the season. You care for your players, the people you made promises to, enough that you at least finish out the season before walking into the sunset. His "heart" wasn't in it because his team sucked. He even specifically says if they were winning he could still go for years. He's still got the fire, he's just a coward that walked away from a bad situation HE created. ESPECIALLY considering the situation in their state right now.

Normally yes but when you're 70 you're on borrowed time. If you're done at that age you're done. Go play golf. The alternative is he coulda been a bowden or Paterno who brought their programs down for years. At least sos had the awareness to get out. He's mentally done. No need finishing it if it's gonna hurt the program..

I wonder if this effects his membership at AN?

Because walking away mid season as your state is undergoing a catastrophe isn't hurting the program? He could have announced this was his last season, allowed them to start the coaching search early, and not leave the program in a state of chaos.

I was talking about it with a friend last night. He thinks maybe some of the bigwigs at SC had a talk with HBC and told him it was about time for him to go. Being who he is Spurrier told them, "Well fuck you! I'll quit right now."

Maybe some truth to that. I can't see him quitting in the middle of a season without some provocation.

Then state the feelings were mutual and move on. That helps his current players and does not go against any other university wanting to call.

What if SC was interested? Would they even approach a guy who could potentially bail if he finds his heart is not in it? If the agreement was mutual, well, that propels his interest elsewhere. Now he is just a hot potato gone cold...

Because he says in his press conference that the AD asked him to stay through the season.
