I'm not sure he meant it to be a true racist remark. I can obviously see how it could be, bu I think what meant to convey was that people need to quit making a big deal about him being an african american because well, his team isn't very good. His being the first african-american coach in the SEC is irrelevant to the play on the field, so therefore people should quit talking as if he's a good head coach because he has yet to show anything whatsoever.
I saw nothing wrong with that remark at all. The media has made a HUGE freaking deal over him being the first black coach in the SEC. If race shouldn't matter, then why is it such a big damn deal ? He is just another coach in my eyes. He has a long road to hoe, but he says the right things and seems like a class act. I don't think for a second that he got screwed at BAMA. Bama went for who they thought was the right guy. I think Mississippi State went for Croom not only because he seems like he will be a good coach, but ALSO because they knew the national attention that they would get from it. They are hoping that all the attention will help them in recruiting. It is only a big deal because the media has blown it in to a big deal. I am tired of it as well. To me, he's not a black football coach, he's a football coach. Let the man do his job without him having to always be asked..."So how does it feel to be the first black coach to do this and that....."
State in 2004 has GOT to be better than State in 2003! Those guys just gave up last year and were horrible.
I wanted to say that in my initial reply...but you summed it up just well. Some people are actually enjoying this Crooms misfortune.
let me tell you how excited I am for the Vandy game... oh boy the red headed stepchild of the SEC is going to be a good game!
Maybe in attitude RED but they are a horrible team. Look at the stats from the Maine game. Their last 10 possessions ended with 2 fumbles, an interception, missed field goal and 6 punts....against FREAKIN MAINE! I feel sorry for Croom because that is a humbling loss. We will destroy them this week.
I really enjoy watching Cutler play QB for the 'Dores. He's a good QB and seems to have a great attitude. I was really pulling for them yesterday against the Magnolias.
Ole Miss got lucky vs Vandy. Real lucky. This year's Egg Bowl may be the first to live up to it's game's name. Wonder if either school will score????
First of all, I admire Croome. And it is great that MSU selected him. He takes nothing. He is in charge. Still, he is a media darling. Not by choice. He has not pursued them. In fact, just the opposite. However, he would probably be given more chances than the average person simply because MSU will not want to appear unfavorable, if the day comes that he needs to go. But he has a real uphill battle. State never has been a "powerhouse." Croome has said already that MSU does not have the SEC type players needed. Probation may be in the future. I hope they do give him time. I think he will do well. By the way, I know some people high up in the Ala. family. They sometimes sit in the President's suite or whatever you call it. He says that Bama was about ready to offer the job to Croome until the Most Reveren "God put me in charge" Jackson started making his demands. Now--before you jump my case--I DO NOT know if that is true or not.
