1. One game at a time.

If the team that showed up against VT shows up for every game and takes care of business we will be hard to beat.

The thing that scares me the most is officiating.

It is something beyond our control and seems to have gone against us at critical times the last few years.

One observation i would make is about the option run by Matt Flynn. I think we are good enough without it and i would not expose my QB to the beating an option QB takes. The whole thing is designed to get your qb hit in order to wait till the rb is able to not worry about the de.

If we want to run Flynn there are better plays that you can design where he controls the contact he receives.

I hope our Coaches come to that conclusion and his leadership on the field and the way he manages the game are his most valuable assets.

Matt Mauck is a prime example. Matt Flynn reminds me of him.

This is a special team and i am just proud to be a tiger fan. I dont know if we win a NC this year but no matter what happens it is going to be a great ride.

I just love college football and what a great time to be a Tiger fan.

Thanks Tigers for representing us and giving all Tiger fans across the world something to enjoy.
  2. i agree with pretty much everything you said except the Flynn option. i think he can handle the option. he does remind me somewhat of matt mauck. it will be interesting to see how he develops over the course of the season.
  3. Mauck ran the QB draw a few times each game. There is no reason we can't take advantage of Flynn's running ability at times. We're only going to call 4-5 run plays a game for him. He's a big guy and can handle some contact. And if you noticed, he gets down when he sees contact coming.

I like using all our weapons.
  4. I agree with Calco. Flynn did not look comfortable with the option. His pitches seemed awkward. Mauck ran a lot of misdirection after fake handoffs. I don't recall the option being a part of our game back then.

Although we did score that one long TD on the option.
  5. What difference does it make if it's a QB draw, misdirection or the option? It's still a designed running play for the QB, which some are concerned about. It shouldn't be a concern if we use it sparingly.

That pitch to KW came out of the pistol formation where KW lined up behind Flynn in the shotgun. They were to close too each other on the pitch, but you can't argue with the results. I like giving defenses different looks to keep them off balance.

Oddly enough, Flynn hurt his ankle on a sack.
    1 person likes this.
  6. Football is a tough sport. We shouldn't try to be overprotective of Flynn, an injury could happen on any play. I'm glad you mentioned this.

Still, I wouldn't, and I don't think we will, go overboard with the QB scrambles.

In response to the first post, the officiating was pretty crap, IMO. But I doubt the officials were intentionally trying to screw us over, and we may have benefited from a few non-calls. It seems the Hokies were as upset with the refs as we were.
  7. The "Pistol" is a modified "Shotgun" in which the QB is closer to the center than "Normal"-about 4-5 steps back behind the center

It’s a compromise between the traditional shotgun and QB under center. One of its advantages is that the center can get set in pass protection or run-blocking quicker from not having to make as long/accurate of a snap.

It also allows a little more breathing room to execute the plays -reverses and fakes can be run at a more efficient speed than the shotgun. Play-fakes are also more effective since the running back isn't so far in the backfield and the distance forces the defense to make a decision about whether to go after the running back or quarterback quicker.
  8. speaking of the "one game at a time" how about the MTSU logo above??

we're done with virginia tech and to quote a very unpopular coach....

    "it's time to move on!"
  9. I think my only problem with Flynn running, that I saw in the VT game, was when we were on the 10 or 15 and he ran and either tripped or ducked about a yard from the first down...

Also, I'm still cautious about his arm. I didn't like the overthrows but it was better than the underthrows glennon was putting out.
