What was the penalty that Terrance Tolliver was called for? Not the one where he pushes off on the DB, but illegal formation or something like that.
i think it was an illegal touch. apparently, he was not an eligible receiver so when he got the ball it was an illegal touch. of course, it's late and i'm tired so i could be totally wrong on that.
It was an alignment foul dro. For him to be an eligible reciever the player to the outside of him had to be back off the line of scrimmage. They were both lined up on the line of scrimmage. If two or more recievers are on the same side of the ball the outside receiver must be back off of the line. Pretty picky foul in a big game but it was on the Kentucky side and their coaches were all shouting and pointing it out. Not much the official could do.
Thanks for that clarification. I was curious about the rule. What is the rationale for it? I wouldn't think there would be confusion about eligibility of a WR lined up wide.
There has to be at least 7 guys on the LOS and the most outside ones are the ones who are eligible receivers. Lafell wasn't far enough off the LOS so he "covered up" Toliver making him ineligible.
It was a very close call. However, you saw what a close call can do last week when Jamal Brown had a similar infraction that cost the Saints a touchdown and ultimately the game. It's a CARELESS penalty. It's not rocket science, just make sure you are lined up correctly.
I'd hardly call it a picky foul. It was pretty obvious; I caught it before the play, although I didn't realize that we ended up throwing to the ineligible receiver until they called the penalty. I thought there were a number of questionable calls in the game; we benefitted from one ourselves, on the 4th down pass interference in the 2nd quarter. But the Tolliver play was clear, IMO.
I dont get that. WRs are taught to check with the ref to see if they are on or off the line of scrimmage. Usually if you are on and should be off the ref will tell you and vice-versa.
Can anyone clarify this for me? I'm not sure how far off base I am here. Tolliver was an ineligible receiver. Him catching the ball resulted in an illegal touching penalty. IF the throw was to someone else. would we have been flagged for having him downfield? Like when linemen blow their assignments and end up downfield. Thansk :]
