Nothing wrong with Monroe unless you detest low crime and great public schools...

and enjoy a long... draw out... tedious... monotnous... slow death of boredom.

That was 1983, the year we played "The Team of the Century" -- Nebraska -- in the Orange Bowl, and lost by ONE POINT despite being a huge underdog. By the Orange Bowl, though, Nebraska had been upset and lost their Number 1 ranking.

We played Fla St late in the season and the decision was made before the game that the Orange Bowl would take the winner. We refused to move the game to daytime, costing Fla St $1 million (they were an independent then and would not have had to split it as conference money). Bobby Bowden was extremely unhappy.

Just after the game started it was apparent we were blowing them away (they were in the Top 5). Oranges started raining down on the field in the 2nd quarter. Either in the third or fourth quarter the ghost of Billy Cannon's fog rolled off the river, crawled up the west side of the stadium and shrouded everything. That's when it really got crazy. We started scoring at will. After one TD we ended up kicking from about the 15-20 yard line because we got a celebration penalty from the players and unsportsmanlike on the fans for throwing oranges. We ended up winning by 30 or 40+ points.

The Orange Bowl thought they might have a national championship game with undefeated Nebraska v about a No. 5 LSU with about a 7-1 record (lost early to Miami, OH -- about the 3rd game of the season). Then we lost to Miss St (who was at the bottom of the conference), Nebraska was upset, and we lost to Tulane (Tulane!). So we head to the Orange Bowl with an 8-3 record and Georgia played Penn State for the National Championship in the Sugar Bowl.

That was also the year we beat the Bear in Alabama 20-10, in a game the Bear said was not nearly that close (at that time Alabama was about 4 and we were about 8). We also held Ole Miss to something like -50 yards total offense in the first half. Stovall had assembled one of the greatest LSU defensive teams ever, and had tremendous talent (Dalton Hilliard, James, Leonard Marshall, I think, along with a senior TE, freshman NG, can't remember their names, and several other future NFL players/stars).

The Overton Riots happened the week of the game, Nebraska fans didn't show up like normal because of the upset, and the Orange Bowl was overrun with Purple (The Miami Herald said for one night it was Tiger Stadium East). The game was directly up against the Sugar Bowl and nobody watched on TV, because Sugar was for te National Title. The ratings were horrible. Our last trip to the Orange Bowl.

That team, playing at its peak would have given this year's team at its peak a great fight. I think this year's team would win, but it would be a Florida type game.

I hate to have to correct you but we lost to Miami of Ohio in 1986. We beat FSU in 1982. The score was 55-21. At one point the score was tied 14-14. Fans were throwing oranges before the game started and until it ended. We were 8-2-1 that year going into the Orange Bowl. We lost to MSU(by a late field goal at MSU) and Tulane. We tied Tenn. at home. Dalton's freshman year, he had a breakout game at #4 UF early in the year.

Didn't they pick up the oranges and make orange juice for the student body the next day? Seriously.

I think LSU was ranked #4 before having that devastating loss to Tulane. I think the final score was something like 39-36. Someone please confirrm.

If Nebraska hadn't been beat and LSU beaten Tulane, the game would have indeed resulted in the national champion. Oh so close.
