Seriously, the thought of a drug test screams discrimination. Putting them to work.. Oh, now you have really done it.
What would be the point? I think the goal should be to reduce the amount we spend on welfare, not pump more money into it on feel good fluff with no cost benefit.
The point being. Since they wanna get something for nothing. Put them doing stuff like painting govt buildings or building wheelchair ramps or even cutting grass along highways. Make them earn their keep. Disaster clean up even.
What should they do with their children while they are doing these jobs? Should we up their benefits so they can afford daycare? Again, these are feel good fluff suggestions that do not help reduce costs. Are you not aware that the vast majority of welfare recipients are working single mothers?
You assume that homeless people and bums of all kinds are on welfare. They don't qualify. Most people on welfare are disabled or have dependent minor children to care for.
I think its obvious that he was talking about a specific group. The group likely to cheat the system. That group, under those terms, would be outed more easily. Besides, things like a drug test deny some deadbeat mom from doing drugs and getting welfare b/c she has to many kids.
It is exactly about that. I would feel much better if we didn't hand this shit out to anyone. A simple drug test prevents abusers. Easy. Give them a hand up. Instead of just handing out money, what can we do to help them better themselves and not "depend" on this? Its the entire point. However, at some point we as a nation need to hold people responsible for their actions. Take my case. I made less than 25K a year with a wife and 2 kids while working full time in the military and attending school FULL time. My wife stayed at home with the kids. I qualified for welfare... I didn't take it b/c I knew how to live within my means. The military taught me that along with good parenting. Even if some of you say, "well they give you base housing", yea, it's about as nice as a ghetto style wise and worth at most 8-11k a year, depending on where you live. Still would qualify for max welfare. Not every situation is like this, but jesus. What are we doing to help them? Handing out money isn't help.
