Walnuts, actually. You develop a very good feel for how hard to hit the nut to crack it without smashing it when your knee is the anvil. No moving parts--popular in the third world.
im pretty sure i saw it in popular science and it was a pecan being used. but it was used for any and all nuts. they would actually heat the metal up first.
