    Does it have to do with counterweights? Well, we answered that already.
    For? nope
    Stage? hmm, maybe. Put your thinking cap on.
    Scenery? Nope

    Nope, not counterweights. We all know that they are weights. I gave as much clue as I could in post 508 w/o giving it away. Think outside the box concerning my clue.

    Man, y'all just don't get clues do ya? Stage as in stage coach. These weights were used most often to tether harness horses when hitching posts weren't around. They were used for stage coaches, agricultural horses, etc.

    The deckhands put the bars in the holes and push the thing in a circle to draw up the anchor. Does the rope wrap around the base?
