I understand the 2 greyshirt comitts count against the number of recruits we can sign. I was wondering why Dandy Don and a few others are saying the 2 transfers count against the 2005 recruiting class? Wouldn't they just count against the 85 scholarship limit? I.E. LB-Matt Stoltz transferred & apparently DE-Sean Merrill is heading to Juco. Wouldn't the 2 new transfers take these 2 open scholarships?

Because they do count against the 2005 class, but yes if both Stoltz and Merrill transfer that would give us two more to give.

I always get confused with that but I really don't think it will matter this year as the 85 limit is what will prevent us from bringing in a full class, which would just be 23 this year.

It's hard to figure out w/o knowing who is leaving...

just yet and I am not sure which of the seniors are on schoolarship, the guys who never played anyway.

This year we lose only 9 seniors who are on schollarship I think, looking at the roster on Tiger Rag.

If we lose lets say Livings to Med school and Whit to the NFL and than have 5 players transfer out, that brings us up to 16. Let's say another 2 decide to forego playing football any longer, than we are at 18 schollies available. If we have only 18 available can we give out only 16 due to the sanctions we imposed on ourselves? I'm not quite sure how that works. It may just come off the 25 limit, which in effect wouldn't hurt us at all. Seems like the NCAA would make you take the 2 off the 85 limit.

So that would leave us with 16 available schollies. We already have 9 committments, and that is w/o Keyes or Farr. So that leaves 7 schollies still available. We also have 2 gray shirts I believe that have signed already as well as Joseph and Chase Pittman transferring in, thus leaving us with only 3 to give at this point if my math is correct. Now we may end up with even more guys transferring out and I may have missed a senior or two, but I think these numbers look real to me. Of course, the past 2 years Saban has taken in a lot more than I ever thought we were going to. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Gray shirts count against the 25-annual limit as well as the 85-total limit. We were over 25 last year and gray-shirted two which means we could only sign 23 this year. meanwhile due to low drop-outs and transfers under Nick, the 85-limit will cause us to sign probably 17-22 this year depending on who they think will drop out or transfer. Of course a coach could sign 25 and just not renew some existing scholarships to stay under 85. A new coach has no promises to keep to any of the current players. It may not be a good year to be a fourth string Saban recruit if Miles wants to bring on some more of his own recruits.

Incidently, it is Niswanger who is considering Medical School, not Livings, who took three years to qualify academically to play at LSU.

Sorry about the Livings/Niswinger mix up. We had already lost 2 schollie due to sanctions this year. As for not renewing players schollarships, I would hope and pray that Miles does not go that route, I think if a kid makes a committment to you than you should not take his schoolarship away just because he isn't a starter or major contributor. And I also think that if word of that got out that many recruits would hesitate to sign with us.
