So, this is a thread about the open carry laws that are popping up all over the place. First does anyone here think this is a good idea, and why? 2nd this is more for anyone with some legal expertise. If you were a mother in a custody battle, that spans from California to Texas, the mother is in Cali, Father in Texas, could you use the open carry law in Texas to your advantage? Basically argue you don't feel your children are safe in Texas because of the open carry laws.
There is an old man, he must be near 90, that I see at the CVS drugstore from time to time. The old dude wears a .45 automatic on his belt. He is so frail that I suspect a perp could take it from him, but if the old duffer gets a shot off, the perp would regret it. No one is really threatened by this guy, though. He probably feels safer. But the public in general feels uncomfortable around people wearing guns openly. A young guy wearing a gun will be suspicious and avoided by everyone. Many businesses will not welcome you if you are openly armed. You will draw the attention of every cop in sight, who will shoot first and ask questions later if they feel threatened in anyway. They only time that I carry a pistol openly is walking in my own timberland, which harbors every kind of poisonous snake in North America. And I have carried one on my belt stopping at an interstate rest area late at night. Not a lot of people around and often some low-lifes. I want them to see that I'm armed and dangerous.
It's stupid. People are more likely to die by their own weapon rather than kill an attacker. More guns equal more gun deaths.
Better watch out for drugs too and steep steps..... According to the latest available data from the Centers for Disease Control, drug overdoses were responsible for 38,329 deaths in 2010, 30,006 of which were unintentional.That's a rate of 105 every day, and that number doesn't take into account the 6,748 people treated every day for the misuse or abuse of drugs. In comparison, traffic accidents were responsible for 33,687 deaths in 2010. I have no problem with open carry in general, but these assholes that do the rallies in restaurants with AR15s slung over the shoulders have to go. Those dudes must have tiny dicks.
Often repeated, but I have never seen one shred of evidence to support it. I think the actual most likely probability is that you are most likely to never unholster your gun, unless you are at the range for practice. I am willing to bet the vast majority of guns are never fired or pointed at a living thing.
The only evidence is that of the gun deaths in the US I think its like 50% - 60% are suicides, AKA they used their own gun....

Unlicensed open carry of handguns is legal in about half the U.S. states, and it is relatively common and uncontroversial in some places. Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms. Let’s not mince words, not only is it rare, it’s downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one’s cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates....... In summary, NRA certainly does not support bans on personalized guns or on carrying firearms in public, including in restaurants. But when people act without thinking, or without consideration for others – especially when it comes to firearms – they set the stage for further restrictions on our rights.
