http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissm...d-lose-money-with-a-mac-championship-victory/ Interesting conflict of interest for Bowling Green trying to win that game, which they did. It cost the university about $1 million (their split of the pot). The article indicates they only made $1.3 million in profit last year.
Eh, it's $14million that they never really should have had a chance of getting, anyway. As for Bowling Green, "Hello!?! You play to win the game!!"
The University is on the hook for their allotment of tickets also. If they can't sell them that have to eat them.
When you factor in the BCS makes the school pay for all the tickets plus travel for the players coaches and band, and lodging I'd say yes. UConn lost a bunch money going to the BCS a few years ago.
