Authorities in Sulphur are investigating a shooting that injured former LSU linebacker and Sulphur native Tahj Jones.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Beglis Parkway in Sulphur late Friday night. Jones was taken to West Calcasieu Cameron hospital. The extent of his injuries wasn't known Saturday morning, except that he was stable.

Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coats said an arrest had been made, but the suspect's name was not immediately released. Coats said investigators are still learning details of what exactly happened.

Jones is a 24 year old senior who recently ran drills during LSU's Pro Day in Baton Rouge.

    Update...........

BATON ROUGE – Former LSU offensive tackle Brandon Winey of Lake Charles was arrested and jailed Saturday on one count of attempted second-degree murder of former LSU linebacker Tahj Jones in Sulphur.
Winey, 36, allegedly shot Jones, 24, in the abdomen during an altercation at Town and Country Apartments on Beglis Parkway in Sulphur on Friday night and has had his bond set at $1 million, according to Sulphur Police.

Jones had surgery on the wound Saturday morning in Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, where he was transported early Saturday after being hospitalized at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Friday night in Sulphur – just west of Lake Charles.

“Tahj Jones is out of surgery and is in serious condition,” Rapides Regional Medical Center spokesperson Charla Ducote said Saturday afternoon.

The Rapides Regional Trauma Unit is one of two in the state and regularly takes level one trauma patients, Ducote said.

Jones finished his college career at LSU last season and took part in LSU’s Pro Day drills and timing runs in front of NFL coaches and personnel executives on campus Wednesday.

He played in eight games last season for the Tigers in an injury-plagued season and made 10 tackles with a forced fumble.

He was a Class 5A All-State first team selection in 2008 out of Sulphur High and signed with LSU in 2009. Jones was redshirted his first season. He made 47 tackles in his four-year career with five for losses, two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Winey played at LSU from 1997 through 2000 out of Washington-Marion High in Lake Charles. He was drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2001 but finished with the Denver Broncos that season. He was with the Washington Redskins in 2003 and the New York Giants in 2004.

Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coats said Jones went to an apartment complex to visit a woman and that Winey arrived shortly later to visit the same woman. The woman drove Jones to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital.

A spokesperson at Rapides Regional said Jones was either in surgery or awaiting surgery shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Jones, who finished his career at LSU last season and took part in Pro Day drills and timing runs Wednesday at LSU, was shot in the 1800 block of Beglis Parkway late Friday and taken to West Calcasieu Cameron hospital in Sulphur, according to Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coats.

The extent of Jones’ injuries were not known, according to KPLC-TV in Lake Charles. Jones was later transported to Rapides Regional.

Coats told KPLC that an arrest had been made in connection with the shooting, but the suspect’s name was not available.
