Anyone starting to think about their dove fields yet? I am going to try to plant a good bit more than what I did last year...maybe more....only planted about a 20 yard by 50 yard patch last year and killed several limits off it. Probably gonna try to plant more like 5 acres this time. Maybe 10. Was considering going with a mix of millet and sunflowers but decided I didnt want to have to put all the attention to the sunflowers that they really need so just gonna all browntop millet I guess.....would like to do white but for some reason none of the feeds stores or coops in a reasonable distance carry anything but the browntop millet. Can order the white of course but its a little higher and we have had so much activity coming to the browntop I dont really see the need for going with the white. Anyways.....anyone thinking about their fields, what yall planting and how much yall plant?
We typically do about 2 acres of brown top. Typically plant the first week of June, sometimes 2nd week.
Got my millet in the ground several days ago right before some good rains showed up. Luckily timed it perfect. Comin up good so hopefully will have some birds show up. Already some residents here of course. We have 2 zones in MS and being in zone 2 our season is proposed to open sept 13 this year. Pretty late with some restructuring being done. Usually its Labor Day weekend.
La. opens Sept 7 this year at noon. I'll be going most mornings that week before work. My work day starts at 10am, so it will work out just fine.
You want to know what really sucks? I moved to New York last year because of my wife. Have acreage, fields and great numbers of dove, almost year around. This is the only f-ing state that hasn't classified dove as a Migratory or local bird, therefore no hunting. I (and my dogs) drool as I see flights of 20 or more just come in and land in my field....
That most def sucks. I stay legal but I can easily see how that could drive a fella to pick a few off and hope to not get caught.
Whats yalls field and bird numbers lookin like? Mine browned off pretty good and got a steady number of birds prob 50-60ish coming in but no huge pushes yet. Little bit early still usually its the last week of Aug they start pouring in. Made a couple passes with the bushhog in each of the 3 sections yesterday evening to get some seed on the ground hopefully keep the ones already coming in happy and bring more with em.
I'm fired up for dove season. LDWF changing opening to daylight is going to make the hunt much more comfortable. My uncle who farms about 6000 acres planted milo in my favorite field this year and is letting my buddies and I have it to ourselves. Have probably spent opening day 10 different times in this particular 30 acre field since I was a kid. We only hunted it when my grandfather, or since he passed, my uncle planted milo there. Lots of birds every time.
About the same. Bushhogging this afternoon also. I'll see if I can't get a pic or two this afternoon.
Don't know why but seems like stormy days like this are always when the birds come in here the best. Sittin on the porch watchin it pour down, watchin the lsu Ohio st NC on secn, and watchin the birds pour in. Way to many flyin in to try to guess how many but several dozen easily. Numbers seem to be slowly increasing with today being the most I think I've seen so far.
